Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Wharton.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dustin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out detailing as a hobby and taking care of my own cars. After I graduated high school, I got a full-time job at a car wash/detail center in northern Utah. I worked there for a couple of years until I decided to move away from home and venture off to Colorado. I worked for a few detailing shops, including a BMW dealership where I ran a crew of 12 people and got Detail and Paint Correction certified through BMW North America training.
After working in Colorado for five and a half years, my wife Gena and I decided to go on our own adventure together to the West Coast and moved to San Diego three and a half years ago. I met a man by the name of Dann Williams who owned a mobile detailing business named “Big D’s Mobile” he was also the part-time western regional rep for a company named Opti-Coat Ceramic coatings (my rep). Upon meeting Dann, Opti-Coat had called him to be full time with the company and needed to let his business go. This is where I had the opportunity to actually buy his business instead of just working for him.
Being approved for business loans only three weeks after our arrival to San Diego, we hit the ground running. Building websites, starting marketing campaigns, and changing the name of the business to Official California Detailing, ”OCD” was born!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a bumpy journey, but that has only taught us to overcome and learn to succeed. Being that I had always detailed in a shop or garage, becoming a mobile detailer was a challenge in its self to relearn a lot of new tricks and techniques to produce the same (or better) product we were used to in a controlled environment. Starting a business in San Diego where the detailing industry is quite oversaturated, and having no connections, and being new to the area has been a trial in itself.
After a few years of taking care of our customers and providing high-quality work, we have been able to generate word of mouth and positive reviews. As well as investing lots of time and money into marketing, websites, and social media to help OCD become more visible to the San Diego county

Even though there are an abundance of detailing companies in the San Diego area. This city is like having all the right ingredients the perfect soup for a detailing company to thrive. The weather, the car culture, the vast amount of cars, and clientele in the San Diego area that want to keep their cars clean and protected. San Diego has definitely the edge over a lot of cities for detailers to thrive.
