Meet Dylan Schuck of Schuck Trivia in Downtown and Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Schuck.

Dylan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
So I started off my trivia company, simply because I was a trivia player. I was rather obsessed, and I went to play bar trivia weekly with some friends. A bar really close to me, Guava Beach, was a bar I frequented but they didn’t have a trivia night. In 2011 I remember talking to the GM there and suggesting they add trivia, at the time I just simply wanted a closer trivia spot for me to play at. The GM responded “What and have you host it?” I remember thinking for like 2 seconds and responding “yeah why not?”

The rest is history.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For sure not a smooth road, I got hired by bars and fired by bars. Some bar managers aren’t into trivia, but add it to bring in people, and for different reasons. They don’t think about the big picture. I learned to not over promise to GMs when I start a trivia night. I can’t take people away from my other bars when I get a new account, so I make sure they know I can’t guarantee I can bring new people in.

That’s not what I’m there to do, what I can promise though, is that I can get people to stay, longer than they planned usually, and I can get them to come back. It takes time with a bar and I make sure they know they need patience initially. A struggling trivia night is the worst feeling ever, and I’ve had a few nights I simply had to cancel for lack of patrons.

I have a really good mic presence by now, I’m also really good at interacting with the guests, getting to know them. I’ve made plenty of friends over the years with trivia patrons.
