Meet Gabriela Montini of Gabriela GEM in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Montini.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Gabriela. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I’ve always had an interest in photography and videography since I was young. When I was younger, I took videography classes at the Media Arts Center on El Cajon Blvd. They taught me how to use all the camera equipment, to record and edit videos, to make documentaries, and to use all of the editing software!

After all this, I knew I needed my very own camera. My parents gifted me a Canon T3i for my 13th birthday, and I’ve been hooked since then. I started volunteering at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park with the Teen Producer’s Project.

There I made short documentaries on the Museum and shared my perspective on how to attract more youth into the museum. This allowed me to get more comfortable behind and in front of the camera. Since then, I’ve branched out with some photoshoots, meetups, modeling, fashion shows, videos, and some publications!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I struggled in the beginning with trying to meet new people outside of my usual groups. I started to use social media to reach out to some people. From there, I found out about all of the meetups and collaboration groups in San Diego.

Eventually, I built up the courage to attend a, and it all stems from there. It’s been a pretty smooth road for the most part. I’ve met some remarkable people through all different aspects of art. Sometimes there are challenges that come with working with others, but I try not to let them affect me.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I don’t own a business or anything at the moment, I’m just having fun exploring photography. I use photography as a way to channel my creative and my passion for art. It keeps me trying new concepts and ideas.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always been very charismatic. I have always loved people and working with others. Dancing and trying several different sports, always kept me making new friends and finding new interests. Of all the sports I played, running track and fencing were definitely my favorites.

I remember always having a big heart and a positive attitude growing up, which is mostly why I was constantly connecting with others. In school, I was always trying out new classes, clubs, and groups; I never limited myself.

I think this is why I know so many people from all different walks of life. I’ve always been the type of person where regardless of where I was, I’d somehow manage to make a new friend.
