Meet Josefine Jandinger of The Shout! House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josefine Jandinger, marketing director at The Shout! House dueling pianos.

Josefine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The Shout! House was founded in 2004, and we are the only dueling piano bar in San Diego. The key to our success has been providing a consistent product in a fluctuating market. People know that they will always have a good time when they come to The Shout! House. No matter who you are, you can always expect a good time. We sell one thing, FUN!! And we’re the happiest place in San Diego.

A lot of businesses have opened and closed over the years, but we are still going strong. People know that they get quality entertainment, great food, and fun drinks when they get here, without breaking the bank. The fun factor is high, and the prices are low.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As marketing manager, it’s my job to make sure people know about us and what we do. Even though our concept has been the same since we opened, I try to remind people of how fun we are, and how much fun they would have if they came here. We have to make sure we are keeping things fresh and current and relevant. We have a team of 8 piano players and they are all full-time entertainers working for The Shout! House.

I have noticed over the years that people really like the fact that we are approachable. Our guests have their own favorite piano players and they like to get to know them on a personal level as well. Our entertainers all bring different talent and characteristics to the show. They are not only entertainers, they are all awesome human beings and extremely talented musicians as well.

Working with amazing talent really helps me in my job. Our entertainers love their job, and so do I. The Shout! House is not just the happiest place in San Diego for our guest, it is a happy workplace for all of us that work here as well.

There has been ups and downs through the years and I think the biggest obstacle for me, has been dividing my attention between 2 different venues with completely different concepts. The owners of the Shout! House opened up Garage Kitchen + Bar in 2014. Garage has the same operational staff as The Shout! House and located right next door.

Garage is open for lunch, brunch, dinner, with 51% off happy hour 7 nights a week. Opening up a new venue has been really challenging in a highly competitive market. There is really no-one else doing what we’re doing at The Shout! House, but there is a lot of competition close for Garage. I have had to have a completely different marketing approach.

It has been a challenging but I have grown professionally and personally throughout the process. Garage is now an established restaurant and bar in the Gaslamp. It has taken hard work and dedication from the whole management team, but we can all be proud of where we are today.

Nothing great ever comes easy.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a dueling piano bar located in the heart of the Gaslamp district, downtown San Diego. We are open 7 nights a week with dueling pianos playing every night.

Dueling pianos are 2 face-to-face grand pianos, with a piano player at each piano, playing and singing non-stop. The show combines music and comedy, and the guests can request songs. We are the place to celebrate any occasion. If you have a guest of honor, make sure to let us know, so we can get that person up on stage for a song or a roast.

What sets us apart from other places is that it is non-stop entertainment. The show is never the same and the audience is very much part of the show. There is never a dull moment, you’ll be laughing, singing-a-long, dancing, and having a night to remember. No matter your age, The Shout! House is the place to let your hair down and have FUN!!

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Sweden, and music has always been a big part of my life. I started playing classical violin at age 4. I went to my first concert (Miles Davis) at 5, and my mom would always play jazz and classical music at home.

Growing up, we had a white piano at home. I taught myself how to play from an early age. I went to a music school, from age 9-15 years old, where singing and studying music was part of the daily curriculum.

I went to college in Stockholm Sweden, at a media-focused university. I studied music and marketing. I interned at Live Nation while in college, and I wrote my thesis about music and social media, (back in the early Myspace Music days). I ended up getting a job, working at Live Nation’s marketing department after I graduated.

I moved to San Diego in 2006 and starting working as a sales and marketing manager for The Shout! House in 2007. I have been lucky enough to work with my passions, music and marketing my entire career.

I actually came to the Shout! House as a guest for the first time in 2005, and I even bought a T-shirt. I loved the place!! I have now been in Diego for 11 years, and I am a dual Swedish/American citizen. Music is still a big part of my life. Even though I don’t perform at The Shout! House, I can really appreciate our talented performers at The Shout! House.

I personally sing & play the guitar almost every day. A few years ago, I also bought a white piano, similar to the one I had at my house growing up in Sweden.
