Meet Junior theDISCOpunk of Mr.Sticker in La Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Junior theDISCOpunk.

Junior, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been very DIY. My earlier part of life had been spent in the bar biz & then being a club DJ. PArt of DJing meant lots of promotion & I started having stickers made to hand out with my mix cc’s. Other DJ friends saw me doing stickers so I started getting em made for them. After one of my long talks about different business moves with my buddy Sal Barbier SLB I bought my 1st plotter todo Custom Cut Vinyl decals & started doing those types of decals. I was getting hit up a lot for printed stickers & was using a giant company on the East Coast. I decided I wanted to make them myself & put the word out I was looking for a large format printing machine & old buddy Aaron Thompson was getting outta the design/print biz & sold me his 64″ Epson, I went to Tumyeto where his office was & with the help of Todd Swank & Dj XP we loaded this monster in! I used the machine for a few months before I ended up buying a brand new machine. Instagram had just started & I was curious if I could create a company that would run off of that platform for sales. I told myself if in six months it would drover my mortgage then I would keep doing it. After only a few months it was obvious it would & I really enjoyed doing it, it fulfilled elements I love, from the whole process of designing to the actual making of the design. I instantly decided to try & work with people, designers, artists & companies that I was into, instead of having to print things I didn’t care about I was making stuff I was into!

One of the great things about the internet is being able to connect with like-minded people & at the same time I was trying to learn how to create fonts & was making my own lettering alphabets, I was contacted by Art Meza of Chicano Soul todo some stickers, he saw my hand style & asked me to do a logo for them with one of my main styles & make stickers. Then I started to do more lettering designs for stickers when I had time. I really enjoy making & designing stickers & I wanna thank everyone for their support.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Its never really easy, a lot of times customers have designs that aren’t made for printing & don’t understand that there are two types of color RGB for web & CMYK for printing & the designer is gone so I have to try & make the design work. A lot of time the designs made for web the resolution is really low but it looks good on the screen but if I print it will come out pixelated.

Things are outta my hands that delay orders like machines can always have issues or my supplier shipment gets delayed & I’m outta material so there’s nothing I can do. I kinda stopped offering rush jobs, Anytime you rush it increases the factor for error, the customer’s problem becomes your problem, so you slip the rush job between other jobs which puts production schedule behind.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mr.Sticker! I do design work & make stickers! When I started I had a high minimum of stickers she ordered because I was used to dealing with bigger companies & was more on the wholesale side. I then tried out doing smaller batches at a fair price & it was a game-changer. I realized a lot more people just needed a small stack sticker. I now have a $30 sheet deal, I cram as many as I can in an area, so depending on the size is how many you get, smaller the size the more stickers. I’m really happy that I get to make things that get seen by tons of people & it either helps promote what they are doing or it makes them money. I deal with a lot of artists, instead of selling one piece of original art they are able to sell their art on stickers to make even more money.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Having a good name on the street to me is what it’s about. When people refer me is a big plus, that means I did a good job for someone.
