Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Anderson.
Karen let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I think I started baking as soon as I could read a recipe. I worked in a small bakery in Big Bear Lake while in high school, and that’s when I was introduced to cake decorating.
Raising two children as a single parent didn’t leave a lot of time for baking and decorating as I usually worked two or three jobs at once. Once my children were out on their own, I started back just baking cookies and cupcakes. In 2011, I took classes to learn to decorate cakes and found out that I loved it.
In 2013, California passed The Cottage Food Law which enabled me to start my own business from my home. I started out just doing small birthday cakes for people I knew, and then in 2014, I was asked to make a wedding cake, and I loved it.
Since that point, I knew that wedding cakes were going to be the main focus for me. I love being able to speak to a bride and groom about their cake and then bring it to life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has had its challenges. I had to take a break for a year because the job that provided my main source of income began to take most of my time. I worked very long hours seven days a week. At one point, I didn’t think I would be able to go back to doing this thing I loved.
The Sweet Apron – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Sweet Apron is a Cottage Food Business based in Temecula. I have been in business since 2013. I now specialize in cakes and desserts for weddings. I am known for the succulent and cactus cupcakes that I create. I think the thing I am most proud of is having taken this from a dream to being something I never imagined.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think my proudest moment so far was seeing one of my cakes on the blog for California Wedding Day!
