Meet Kassandra Chavez of Kassy Blends in North Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kassandra Chavez.

Kassandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Honestly, doing hair wasn’t something I grew up wanting to do. Before I ever thought about doing hair, I graduated with a criminal justice degree to pursue law enforcement. It was very interesting, but it wasn’t something I actually wanted to do. It was more of, “you graduated high school now hurry up and choose a career.” Afterwards, I ended up working for Old Navy for seven years switching from different management positions, but I wasn’t happy. When I met my husband, he was a barber and I noticed how much he loves what he does. One day I just thought about trying out hair for myself and signed up with Paul Mitchell the School San Diego right away, not knowing anything about hair! It was the best career choice I have ever made. I ended up loving to do hair, especially blonding!

Once I graduated PM, I started working a few salons but always ended up leaving because I felt like I couldn’t grow. I had no other choice but to go on my own in Eastlake. It was probably the scariest thing ever since I was a newbie in the industry, I’ve only been doing hair for almost a year at the time, and I didn’t even have a full clientele yet. Then I started hustling! I made business cards, invested in the best products for my clients, worked as much as I could, educated myself with videos from YouTube, and took advantage of Instagram for marketing my work. Not too long after, I started getting booked up at least a few weeks to a month in advance! Then I started taking over semi-permanent ombré powder brows and moved my business to North Park.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Has it been a smooth road? Definitely not. I feel like everything in life comes in roadblocks. One thing I can say is the beauty industry is beautiful! There are so many amazing people! But it’s also a cutthroat industry. Not everyone wants you to see you succeed or grow. But if you just focus on what you love to do, negative opinions won’t matter or won’t even affect you. I was told a few times that I wasn’t ready to be on my own, that it would require 2+ years to work under someone else.

Fast forward to now, I’m a business owner, within nine months from graduating Paul Mitchell. I have a salon located in North Park. I also so semi-permanent ombré powder brows, and I’m booked and busy. I didn’t know I could do this in a short amount of time, but had I not given myself a chance. I definitely doubted myself a few times and I only had a few people that supported me. When you focus on what you love, anything is possible. When opportunities come your way, don’t let them pass you by! You never know where it can take you.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kassy Blends story. Tell us more about the business.
I am located in North Park doing hair and ombré powder brows. I specialize in balayage and hair extensions. I love to take care of my clients and make everyone feel and look beautiful!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe it was luck. Everything you want in life and in business, you’re going to have to work for it every day. I still have more plans ahead and more growth to do. I’m also open to a lot more opportunities in the future!
