Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Dalrymple.
Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had kind of a twisted love affair with health and fitness, partially driven by my deep reverence for the human body and partially by my deeply wounded self-image. As an athlete, I spent a lot of years focusing on optimizing my physical body and mind for performance. After college, I shed my identity as an athlete and went on to work as a personal trainer and continue my education at Equinox Fitness Academy.
It was during that time, beyond the context of being an athlete, that I really began to understand that true wellness meant so much more than just physical fitness. So, I dove deep into the practice of yoga because I found it to be the most integrative and holistic practice. As I began to understand the physical, mental, energetic and spiritual aspects of the self and as I felt myself evolving, I fell in love with the practice and tumbled deep down the rabbit hole of healing and self-development.
After just one year of establishing my personal yoga practice, I quit my job and flew to Bali to do my yoga intensive teacher training with Zuna Yoga, which will definitely go down in my personal history as one of the best life decisions I’ve ever made. The practice of yoga has turned my world inside out and upside down in the best way possible.
After teaching in studios for a while, I knew I wanted to work one on one with people in order to dive deeper into healing and exploring the principles of yoga, so I’ve spent the past year studying under Oprah’s very own life coach, Martha Beck, to become an intuitive life + wellness coach. And, as the end of my coaching program nears, I have never felt more aligned and ready to share this healing work with the world. My love affair with wellness is more pure and passionate than ever before.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is anyone’s road smooth? When I think back to the first 20-something years of my life, I feel so sad for the girl that tortured herself with the belief that she wasn’t good enough. I spent so many years ashamed of my body, lacking confidence and self-esteem, and measuring my worth based on how others perceived me.
I spent so many shame-ridden years in spirals of disordered eating that negatively affected my mood, my energy, my physical health, my relationships and social life, my athletic career and almost every daily decision I made. I had an unhealthy way of pacifying my emotions with food, so a lot of wounds went unhealed until I found yoga and learned how to sit with and move through emotion. My personal healing journey has definitely been a bumpy one but in the best way.
Through yoga and life coaching I have come to understand and love myself on a deeply intimate level. I’ve worked hard to heal my limiting beliefs, to connect to my essential self and to expand my understanding of human nature. This understanding of human nature and passion for healing and personal development is the foundation of the work I do. These practices and tools continue to help me experience peace and freedom in my mind, body, and soul, so I want to help share them with as many people as I can.
Please tell us about How’s Your Soul Podcast and Kelly Jeanne Life Coaching.
My “why” is to guide people to feel free, peaceful and at home in their soul’s skin.
Teaching yoga, hosting my podcast (How’s Your Soul), and coaching people one-on-one are all the ways that I get to join people on their beautiful soul journey to becoming the highest expression of themselves. I think I’m most proud of my podcast for a number of reasons.
Launching the podcast was truly momentous for me in that It took major guts for me to put my work out there and vocally express myself in such a public way. It definitely marked the beginning of Kelly 2.0, who’s courageous and bold and not afraid to speak her mind. I love offering free content that is super valuable and accessible to everyone. The life coaching aspect of my business is special because I use yoga principles, ancient wisdom and modern work to help people heal and move toward their highest expression.
While I encourage everyone to have their own solo healing practice, there is nothing more revealing and empowering than one-on-one work. Hiring a coach means hiring someone to hold space for you, to hold up a mirror to help you truly see within and understand yourself, to help you sort through limiting beliefs and, of course, to challenge you. As a coach, even I have a coach, because that’s how powerful one-on-one work is.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite childhood memories that I always come back to is of me and my twin brother on our family trip to Hawaii. We went down to the beach late at night, grabbed some beach chairs and reclined. We spent an hour gazing up at the stars and talking about life. As someone choosing a career that involves sitting and talking about life… it makes sense to me now why this is one of my favorite memories.
