Meet Kenneth Van Billiard of Temecula

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Van Billiard.

Hi Kenneth , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a craftsman in the Temecula Valley didn’t start with just a paintbrush; it started with a commitment to doing things the right way, even when the “right way” takes more time.

For years, I’ve operated under a simple philosophy: if you’re going to do it, do it to last. I stepped into the industry with the goal of bringing a higher level of professionalism to the trade. As the owner and RMM of VB Painting Services, I’ve focused on bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.

Early on, I realized that to stand out in the Inland Empire and across the San Diego markets, I had to offer more than just a fresh coat of paint. I dove deep into the science of coatings. While many were sticking to the basics, I was mastering Renner 2K systems and high-performance Pro Industrial finishes. I wanted my clients—from the coastal estates of San Diego County to the vineyards of Temecula—to have surfaces that didn’t just look good on day one, but stayed looking brand new for years.

As the business grew, so did my toolkit. I realized that a perfect paint job is often ruined by poor trim or dated hardware, so I expanded. I started handling:

• Custom Finish Work: Pulling and replacing baseboards and door casings to ensure every line is crisp and every transition is seamless.
• Comprehensive Remodeling: Taking on diverse renovation tasks and drywall repairs, using my experience with new construction to ensure every repair is structurally sound and aesthetically perfect.
• Electrical & Detail Work: I integrated light electrical services, like upgrading switches and rerouting outlets, because I believe the finishing touches—like a modern outlet against a freshly painted wall—are what truly make a room feel complete.

Today, my focus has shifted toward scaling the business and building a legacy of quality. I’ve moved beyond being just a contractor on a job site to becoming a specialist who manages the vision of high-end transformations.

Perhaps the most rewarding part of this journey, however, has been our contribution efforts. My favorite part of growing this business is the ability it gives us to give back to the community. I am incredibly grateful to our clients; by trusting us with your homes, you provide us with the opportunity to give as much as we can. As we continue to scale, I look forward to expanding our reach and making an even greater impact through our giving.

We are actively expanding our footprint deeper into San Diego, bringing our signature high-end finishes and professional standards to a wider range of homeowners and developers.

By investing in the best materials and refining our systems, I’m building a company that can handle more complex, larger-scale projects without ever losing the personal touch and precision that got us here.

I’m proud of the footprint I’ve made, and I’m even more excited about the growth ahead as we continue to transform homes across Southern California.

‘Where Quality Meets Integrity’

VB Painting Services

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In every trade, the road to mastery is rarely paved, it’s usually covered in sawdust, overspray, and lessons learned the hard way. Building VB Painting Services has been an incredible journey, but it certainly hasn’t been without its hurdles.

Here are a couple of the struggles that shaped the business:

1. The “Quality vs. Speed” Battle
In the early days, one of the biggest challenges was competing in a market saturated with “blow-and-go” painters. It was a struggle to explain to potential clients why our process took longer and cost more. I had to stand my ground and refuse to cut corners, even when it meant losing a quick job. I spent many nights wondering if the market truly cared about the difference between a standard latex finish and a high-performance Renner 2K system. It took time and a lot of grit to find the right clients, those who value longevity over a cheap price tag, but staying true to that standard is what eventually allowed us to scale.

2. Mastering the Technical “Deep End”
Moving into high-end remodeling and electrical work wasn’t a simple transition. Every time I expanded my “toolkit,” I faced a steep learning curve. I remember the pressure of my first major remodel and the weight of ensuring that every rerouted outlet and every piece of custom casing was up to the rigorous standards of a new construction build. There were long days of troubleshooting and deep-diving into technical specs to ensure that our work wouldn’t just look perfect on the surface, but would be functionally superior. Balancing the demands of running a business while personally mastering these complex new skills was exhausting, but it’s what turned me from a painter into a specialist.

3. Scaling While Maintaining the “Personal Touch”
As we began expanding deeper into San Diego, the struggle shifted toward logistics. How do you grow a team and a footprint without losing the “Integrity” part of our slogan? It’s a constant challenge to ensure that as we handle larger-scale projects, every client still feels like they are our only priority. Learning to build systems that replicate my own obsession with detail, without being in two places at once, has been a major growth point. It’s a work in progress, but it’s a struggle I embrace because it’s the only way to build a legacy that outlasts me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I’m Known For
In the Temecula and San Diego markets, I’m known as the guy you call when you want it done right the first time. I’ve built a reputation for:
• The “Clean” Job: My prep work is obsessive. I’m known for leaving a job site cleaner than I found it and for masking off a house so thoroughly it looks like a laboratory.
• New Construction Standards: Because I worked on high-end new builds, I bring that “from-scratch” precision to older remodeling projects.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m most proud of our Contribution Efforts. Building a successful business is great, but the ability to use that success to give back to the community is what keeps me motivated. Every time a client trusts me with their home, they are directly helping us expand our reach in our giving programs.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned, and it’s one that affects every project from the vineyards of Temecula to the coast of San Diego, is that you can’t build a high-end finish on a low-end foundation.

In the beginning, I thought mastery was all about the final spray: that perfect, glass-like sheen of a 2K coating. But I quickly realized that the “magic” doesn’t happen in the last hour of the job; it happens in the first ten.

1. Preparation is the True Craft
I learned that integrity isn’t just about being honest with the client; it’s about being honest with the surface. You can put the most expensive Italian lacquer in the world over a poorly sanded door or a rushed drywall patch, and it might look great for a week. But eventually, the truth comes out. The lesson was simple: Never rush the prep. Whether it’s stripping a door to the bare grain in Wildomar or meticulously masking a master suite in Harveston Lake, the foundation determines the legacy of the work.

2. Value Over Volume
I learned that trying to be everything to everyone is a fast track to mediocrity. To truly scale VB Painting Services, I had to learn the power of saying “no.” I learned to wait for the clients who understand that quality costs more because it saves more in the long run. By focusing on being a specialist rather than a generalist, I was able to integrate remodeling and electrical work into my process, ensuring that every detail, down to the way a light switch sits against a new finish, meets my standards.

3. The “Circle of Giving”
Perhaps the most personal lesson was realizing that a business is only as strong as its contribution. I used to think of “giving back” as something you do once you’ve “made it.” I learned that it’s actually the other way around: the more you give, the more purpose your work has. My favorite part of this journey hasn’t been the growth of the bank account, but the growth of our ability to help others. Our clients aren’t just buying a paint job; they’re partnering with us in our effort to make a positive impact.

Ultimately, I’ve learned that Quality and Integrity are inseparable. If you cut a corner where no one can see it, you’ve already failed the finish.
