Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Anderson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Like many of our employees, the San Diego Ice Arena has played an important part in my life since I was a child. I started skating and taking skating school lessons since I was seven years old. I spent a great part of my youth having fun on the ice while also improving my skating ability, I had and attended birthday parties, skated public sessions, skated freestyles, volunteered and competed in competitions.
At age 19, I was given the opportunity to work in the Sports Shop & as a Skate Hero at the San Diego Ice Arena doing everything from fitting skates to helping new skaters skate to marketing programs such as skating school, hockey and birthday parties. Meanwhile, I continued my education (and eventually graduated), while working part time at the rink. Along the way, I was given opportunities to be in charge of the program office, birthday parties, groups, etc. And since 2009, with the owners’ (Linssen family) trust and guidance, I am too proud to be the rink’s administrator / business controller and although my duties vary – one of my responsibilities is to help make sure the business keeps running at any given time.
Has it been a smooth road?
The San Diego Ice Arena has been around since the early 1970’s. During that time, the Mira Mesa community as a whole has grown, new technology has been developed and views have changed, the business as a whole is always working towards improving and working towards creating a “wow” moment for current and future customers when they visit our facility.
Innovation, often requires one to work in the unknown and sometimes thought processes are not fully worked out or can even result in an unattended effect. This can cause some challenges to overcome but ultimately for the betterment of the whole. For example, back when social media deal sites were new, we experimented with creating a particular online deal but found that it did not meet our target market.
Instead of scrapping the idea as a whole, we instead changed the deal until it had a better chance of targeting the new customers we sought to bring into our business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are known for our Skate Hero program which is made up of friendly, younger staff helping skaters and helping create a fun environment filled with on-ice games and dances. Many of our skate heroes have proudly gone through our programs and help carry on the magic they experienced when they first started out skating.
Our award-winning birthday party program is a fun, all-inclusive and high energy program which aims to create a remarkable party experience especially for the birthday child on their special day.
Our skating school is one of the largest skating school programs in the country. Skaters of all ages and levels receive individualized attention from our world class coaching staff. From tiny toddlers taking their first steps on the ice to high-level extreme power stroking, from adult, dance, group performance classes, skaters of all skill levels and ages are sure to find a class that fits their needs.
Our hockey program has produced athletes from NHL to junior hockey league skaters. We offer house league for all ages, as well as developmental, clinics, tournament and travel team options for you and your favorite hockey players to choose from.
In addition to our Mira Mesa facility, since 1997, we have proudly partnered up with Sentre Partners, to a run a seasonal, temporary rink, “Rady’s Children’s Ice Rink” in Liberty Station in San Diego. All proceeds from “Rady’s Children’s Ice Rink” goes towards Rady’s Children’s Hospital’s Peckham Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders.
Ultimately, as a business, we pride ourselves in creating a fun, family-oriented atmosphere. Our mission statement is “To wow out customers with a remarkable experience when visiting the San Diego Ice Arena.”
