Today we’d like to introduce you to Milly Marie.
Milly, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Before I joined the military (navy) I was a theater kid. I loved performing, the costumes, the makeup, everything. Once I got out, I stumbled upon a burlesque show and it was everything I was missing from my time on stage. I joined a local troupe that ended up disbanding a little over a year later. Not wanting to give up something I love and something that was helping me cope with my newly diagnosed PTSD, I created Bless Your Heart Burlesque. My vision was to be a stage for people wanting to express themselves. No matter size, race, sex, or style. I wanted us to be true to ourselves and unique to the stage.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Creating a group of diverse people and personalities can always come with its troubles. But fortunately, we are a family. We have run into photographers not shooting my POC performers and venues deciding we weren’t their type of entertainment. We make sure to not let these things get us down and most importantly let it be known it’s not ok to act this way. We are all beautiful. We are all amazing. We have no room for racism, sexism, or size discrimination.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am the creator and head producer. I create the shows, I make sure the members are comfortable and happy. I negotiate the upcoming years. I’m so proud of each member of this troupe because without them my dream of having a stage that accepts anyone wouldn’t be possible. We are different individually. Every performance and every performer is different. For example, I’m very theatrical and “cheesecake” as to where I have a performer who sultry and serious. Our shows are fun, themed, and a full night of entertainment.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been an outgoing, go getter type of person. I’ve always wanted to be a performer and did anything to get that spotlight. I joined many clubs, also volunteer to help others regularly, something I still do as I volunteer with Pinups For Pit Bulls and I even put on an annual show to help raise funds for that charity.
