Meet Moe Girton of Gossip Grill in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moe Girton.

Moe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started in this business 18 years ago working at a lesbian bar called The Flame. I started out as a door girl and worked my way up to Bartender, then into management.

After the flame sold in 2004, I was lucky enough to land a bartending job with a new opening restaurant called Baja Betty’s. I slang booze, made connections and built my business for almost 6 years before opening Gossip Grill and joining Mo’s universe Restaurant Group. Though they had to talk me into it, I didn’t jump at the idea of opening a lesbian bar.

I really wanted to give the community a Women’s bar that is open to everyone and celebrates Women. I wanted it to be fun, outrageous and safe. I looked forward to offering a sense of community for our guest. All awhile providing amazing food, strong drinks and incredible energy. The staff had to be kind, genuine and FUN

Gossip Grill Opened on Halloween in 2009 and after outgrowing our original space and moving to a larger location, we are now one of the top Women’s bar in the nation.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, we had our challenges. Opening a Women’s Bar was hard for some people to get. Why not a Lesbian bar? We wanted to be a space for ALL women could come. Queer, Bi, Trans, straight, etc. while also being a LGBT bar that welcomes everyone to our fabulous playground as long as they are respectful of the fact that we are a safe place for women. Maintaining that balance is always a challenge.

Gossip Grill is a fun, high energy, Restaurant/Bar/Nightclub that welcomes everybody, and celebrates Women! What makes Gossip Grill and the Mo’s Universe establishments so unique is the culture of the organization. We have mastered the art of taking our guest on a wild good time and are unapologetic for it. The energy is contagious and you can’t help but let your guard down and just have fun! It’s like a vortex! It’s not usual to come in for lunch and still be there for dinner. Don’t worry, we won’t tell.

We are known to be over the top including large inflatable flamingos, Drag shows, and our flirty, sometimes censored drink menu. Enjoy our Truffle Mac & Cheese, or our famous HBC Beer Battered Fish & Chips

We also pride ourself on giving back to the community by donating 10% or more.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love this city! I love the people and I love our community! San Diego is a perfect fit for us. Most of our restaurant is outside including 2 front patios. With the weather being amazing year round, it allows for us continually create a fun outdoor environment. Nothing beats sipping on a Pink Glitter Rimmed Frose (frozen rose) while sitting on a patio with your friends, listening to the Dj and enjoying the gorgeous weather
