Meet Myduyen and Thanh Nguyen of Deli Sushi & Desserts in Miramar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myduyen and Thanh Nguyen.

Thanh and Myduyen are brother and sister. They wanted to open a sushi restaurant in an industrial area to provide companies and workers more lunch options in the area aside from deli sandwiches and fast food. They kept the Deli concept as fast ordering and take out. When they first picked the location, they were next to 2 Kids brewery and 3 years later they have 4 more breweries, 1 sake, and two wineries opened in their surrounding plaza. They decided to open a little later and on Saturday to cater to the breweries crowds. They got to where they are today because they offer the best prices in town and freshest sushi and got listed on yelp top 100 restaurants in San Diego in 2015. Their Monster Sushi Roll got famous and viral through social media platforms and got featured on Food Envy, Business Insider (Insider food), 17 worldwide MTV’s, and Fortify. Which brought in so many customers worldwide and tourists in the area.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We are very fortunate and blessed with this business, from a small business in a hidden industrial area to getting known by so many people. The only struggles we had in the past was turning a warehouse into a sushi restaurant. It took us 7 months long to go through with the city for permits, health departments requirements and building it from the ground up.

Deli Sushi & Desserts – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Deli Sushi & Desserts is known for our affordable prices, in house sauces, and our famous Monster Sushi roll. Our Monster Sushi roll started out as a food challenge and can be purchase to share as well. When we got known and famous for it, we decided that customers can upsize any rolls on the menu! Deli Sushi & Desserts is different from every other sushi restaurant because we make the largest sushi rolls in the world! Each roll weigh as much as a new born baby (5-6lbs). It looks exactly like a normal roll, cut into 8 pieces, but just upsized and each piece is as big as a burger instead of bite size.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success comes from hard work. My brother Thanh and I worked hard everyday from open to closed. From doing our own groceries, making our own sauces, roasting our own sesame seeds, and prepping everything ourselves. In our mindset, to be successful, you have to earn it with your hard work and be patient. You can’t leave your business in hands of others and expect it to be successful. So, we decided to work hard everyday and getting to know our customers is also a key to success, because words of mouth is the best advertisements. A lot of people had asked us, how is it to work with family? To us, family is everything, we hold a great bond, trust, and happiness, and we believe that is important to success as well.

When are you going to start opening on Sunday, since the other nearby businesses are open then? We’ll come!
