Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Dantu.
Angela, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started back in 1966 in Kingston, Jamaica. As a young girl, I would help my grandmother bake her rum cake. I remember vividly, I helping her chop up fruits that we purchased from local markets. She would soak the fruits in Jamaican rum and red wine. Back then, my grandma was not selling the rum cake for profit. It was not until her daughter, my mother, decided to create a business out of the family recipe. Around this time, my mother and our family moved to British Columbia, Canada. I was in my early teens at this point. Just as I helped my grandmother bake as a little girl, I continued the tradition with my mother too. My mom was successful with her rum cake business. Though, as my mother had other things to tend to in her life, she could not dedicate as much time to the business. Thus, in 2008, my mom so kindly passed the torch to me. And, from there, I have continued my grandmother’s legacy of Reggae Rum Cake.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any business, we have had our ups and downs. I had a contract baker a few years ago but we parted ways due to his lack of consistency with the recipe. It was very hit and miss. So, we eventually moved on and found someone else. We also have struggled with purchasing the Jamaican rum in bulk. As you know, this delicious liquor is quite expensive.
Please tell us about your business.
Our business is called Reggae Rum Cake. Our goal is to take this legacy nationwide. I have my husband and three daughters who are all involved, so it’s a family thing. We are proud to be able to share our Jamaican culture and my grandmother’s roots. What makes us different is we make our cakes with no nuts, no preservatives and 100% pure Jamaican rum. To our knowledge, we’re the only Jamaican rum cake that’s focusing on the Jamaican legacy and carrying on a lasting recipe.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the next couple of years, we would like to sell to local coffee shops.
