Meet Yazi Yazmine Gingras of Yazi in Normal Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yazi Yazmine Gingras.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started rapping about five years ago but I’ve been surrounded by music and performance arts my whole life. My dad is a musician and my mom is a dancer, writer, and painter. At the time, rapping became a tool for me to understand myself and think about life and existence. It healed and continues to help me grow and experience so much through self-expression. Because of where I was in my life at the time, it became my biggest outlet and I got easily obsessed with it and have been done in some form almost every day since day one. About a year ago, I had a realization that art is one of the purest forms of living and that I didn’t have anything holding me back. I’ve always wanted to help people on a large scale and meet my message of self-love and reflection with my music. That’s when I decided to be 100% all-in and committed to pursuing it as a career. I started the SD Music Room Meetings I’m January which is a networking group made to support local artists in the hip-hop community. From rappers to singers, producers to videographers, it’s a place that welcomes all ages and skillsets to connect, grow, and refine their craft. The idea is, that you create when you’re inspired, and you stay inspired by surrounding yourself with like-minded creative people. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to release singles, music videos, and perform a lot in San Diego this year. That’s offered me more opportunities that keep me busy and progressive.

November 2019, I will be releasing my first album, Twisted Tongue. This body of work is something that’s been in the making for years. You’ll hear, chopper fast rapping, complex rhyme schemes, singing, philosophy, strange metaphors, and the inner workings of how my mind interprets life. I’m very proud and excited to be able to share it along with another music video soon. I’m also a part of a group called the Spookygang filled with diverse and highly skilled independent artists who collaborate and support each other. My peers have surrounded me with so much talent and open arms. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for the San Diego hip-hop/arts community. I don’t know where this will take me, but I have big visions and a growing list of massive goals. As long as I’m enjoying what I’m doing and making a positive impact, I feel fulfilled and on the right path. Very excited for what the future holds. 🙂

Has it been a smooth road?
There are always challenges but if it were all easy, there would be no growth. I am constantly having to find my way back to balance with having long days and long nights. Managing my time and energy is probably the biggest. I work multiple jobs and am out in the scene a lot either performing or supporting. I tend to take on a lot of projects but honestly, I like the challenge and to problem solve. It’s all a lot of fun for me

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
As an independent artist, I do everything myself so I am my own brand. Focusing on becoming a better well-rounded artist each day. The SD Music Room would be my second largest project. It’s all about supporting artists so we can all thrive and feel a sense of community

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Right now, the hip-hop scene is thriving. There are many artists who are extremely talented and motivated. I think it’s a great time and thing to be a part of. We just have to continue to offer each other support so we create more opportunities for everyone.
