Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Torres.
Hi Jorge, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Northern California, a very small town. On Saturdays, we would watch karate movies all together, and we would try to mimic them. I got more and more interested in martial arts. I started training for karate then I got into taekwondo. Ever since then, I dedicated myself to it, I got my certificates and my black belts, which ultimately led me to open my own taekwondo school in 2014 in the city of Imperial Beach. Today, I mostly work with youth and children.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of the many challenges I have faced with is staring a business from ground zero. I had to find a good location for the school and learn different ways to advertise, for example, social media. Another obstacle would be being away from home. Though I’m a taekwondo master, I still need to learn how to teach, referee and such. Therefore, I usually have to go to seminars, but I have to sacrifice my time with my kids.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I teach taekwondo to children and how to become young leaders. I also show them how to overcome they’re their boundaries and limits. I’m able to teach any children regardless of any disabilities or race. I’m proud of my students who achieve their goals.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is the day I started martial arts. It was the summer of 1987; I walked in a karate school in the small town I grew up in, and I asked to join. It was the one of the greatest decisions of my life.
