Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Roxas.
Jerry, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I spent a great deal of time (admittedly, much more than I should have!) in my previous life chasing that almighty dollar. After starting, building and selling several successful (and one not so successful) financial services companies throughout the years, in early 2014 I was rewarded for all of my hard work and effort with sudden and massive heart failure. Thankfully, I was visiting my mother at the time, who kept it together long enough to get me to a hospital. After a quadruple bypass and two weeks in ICU at Scripps Memorial, I was sent home to humbly recover. Needless to say, this “little” medical episode was just what I needed to re-evaluate what was important in my life!
I made the cognizant decision to no longer live to work, but rather to just live… I took up digital photography as a hobby while recovering to tap into my creative side, and I released all of my other ‘hobbies’. When I wasn’t walking and strengthening my heart, I was watching countless videos and tutorials on photography, and practicing my new found craft. I wanted my photos to feel, capture and share specific moments in time. I wanted my images to tell a story, and to leave a mark on the world. It was (and still is) liberating.
Soon enough, people began asking me to share their stories through my images. It all started with a man and his best friend, then a family’s joyfulness during the holidays, and soon the magic of pregnancy, the triumph of graduating, and the commitment of two lives being joined together forever. My prior experiences in business allowed me to establish and grow my business extremely quickly and seemingly effortlessly. No longer was my business structure being used to fatten my pockets… instead, it was being used to share my passion.
Just a few short years later, I’m mentoring several photographers and videographers, and Jerry Roxas Photography, Videography & Entertainment continues to grow and help people feel, capture and share what matters most. I’m so blessed to have been stricken, because of this amazing life I now get to lead!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, when you’re passionate about something, things tend to go relatively smoothly. That’s not to say there aren’t obstacles, because there always are and will be. But when you’re passionate about something, you don’t tend to see those obstacles so much as challenges, but as opportunities to improve your passion. I’ve gone through countless cameras, flashes, diffusers and equipment, testing and retesting to find the right combination of tools that can create my images. I’ve encountered numerous personalities, all reacting to moments differently, and I try to learn and appreciate each one. I’ve faced several business challenges that I’ve either addressed head on or side stepped for another day. At the end of the day, my goal has always been to share a story, and I’ve seen that if you stick true to your goal, you can handle all that comes your way.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My past experience has been instrumental in the rapid growth and success of Jerry Roxas Photography, Videography & Entertainment. Having started multiple companies before, setting up the structure for my photography company was relatively easy. Since I specialized in technology and operations, developing and implementing fool proof processes for my photography business was almost second nature to me, so it allowed me to focus more on my clients and my craft, versus building my business.
But without a doubt, I credit my communication with my clients with the majority of my success. I’m constantly reaching out to them, confirming with them, and making sure there’s nothing more I can do to alleviate any of their concerns about their event.
