Meet Laura Maly and Michael Anderson of Wonderist Agency in Point Loma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Maly and Michael Anderson.

As a husband and wife team, Wonderist Agency start in 2011 with a $100 bill at a kitchen table. In a few short years, they’re in over 25 states with over 100 clients and a team of 15 in San Diego, with hires happening almost monthly.

When Co-Founder Laura’s friend graduated from dental school and struggled to piece together a marketing team with four different companies, she saw an opportunity to step in as a consultant and focus on a unified marketing effort for dentists that prioritized results. Shortly after Laura had established her first few clients, she met her future business partner and husband, Co-Founder Michael Anderson. Michael’s experience in the startup space helped shift Wonderist Agency’s focus from consultation to a full-service agency.

Wonderist Agency sextupled in its first year and began hiring team members. In 2015, Wonderist Agency moved into its first office in Point Loma. Within a year, outgrew it and in July moved into their new, 4000 sq. ft. home next to Liberty Station. The office features an open-concept design with the obligatory exposed duct-work, ping pong table and beer fridge.

In 2018, they’re excited to step into new verticals as they look to move into new verticals in the health care space to extend their portfolio and offerings.

Has it been a smooth road?
Bootstrapping a company with no outside investment has meant we need to be creative and strategic in our growth. We started at a kitchen table and our first team members joined us in our home, which certainly sounds unorthodox, but has helped us grow into a beautiful office and with a wonderful and talented team.

Being in the technology space, there is a constantly changing benchmark and we have invested in young talent to make sure we are always pushing the products and services we provide to be cutting edge.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Wonderist Agency is a full-service marketing agency that works exclusively with dentists. We serve small business owners across the country to help them generate new patients for their practices. We provide local and digital marketing services, we build WordPress websites, and manage SEO, PPC, social media and digital marketing campaigns.

In addition, we offer local marketing strategy that includes direct mail, radio, TV, local events, and brand design.

The dental marketing space has been dominated by poor design and low accountability. We pride ourselves on personalized design that celebrates the unique practices we represent. We also are known for meticulously tracking ROI. We provide a 24/7 dashboard that integrates all marketing platforms and ties marketing dollars back to results.

As we’ve grown, investing in a fantastic team culture has been one of our priorities. The company currently focuses on four cultural pillars- Leadership, Social Good, Health, and Fun. This includes happy hours, themed socials, speakers, and team excursions (escape rooms, wine tasting trips, summer camp socials, Halloween parties, etc.). As part of our culture, it also means having an expertise in marketing and dentistry. We stand alone in our competitive set with the swift service, caring team and personal investment in the dentists and practices we serve.

We’re most proud of the culture and people we work with. It was important for us to build a company we were excited to come to work for. There is a great energy here when you walk in the door. We have fun and are silly, but also work hard, are strategic and are excellent collaborators and innovators amongst ourselves and with our clients.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, absolutely! We’ve lived all over the country and San Diego is an absolute hotbed! We moved down here about two years ago from Los Angeles for the growth potential we saw and have no regrets. Having grown up in Milwaukee, Michael and I were seeking a city that was accessible and friendly on the west coast. San Diego has a welcoming business community, a thriving talent pool fueled by the universities and it fosters a happy, healthy culture. Specifically, we love being next door to Liberty Station. Lunch at the public market, coffee at Moniker General and happy hour at Desi’s and Fireside put opportunities for fun and supporting other small business at our finger tips.

Both Michael and I are active in the community, leaving many opportunities for our business to get involved and support many other local organizations- lending our time, resources, and talents to the San Diego Dental Health Foundation, the Junior League of San Diego, Just in Time foster youth and animal rescue.
