Meet Paula Sturm of Radically Nourished in Del Mar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Sturm.

Paula, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Being a Registered Dietitian is a second career for me. The decision to pursue this path came when I saw how impactful nutrition was to my new found fitness passion. I knew when I went back to college that I wanted to focus on preventative measures to health and wellness, to help prevent people from being diagnosed with the debilitating health issues that plague so many people.

With that intent in mind, after finishing college I furthered my education in integrative and functional medical nutrition, culinary nutrition, nutrition and genomics, and became a Certified Food and Spirit Practitioner. My combination of conventional medical nutrition training along with my functional medical nutrition training has given me a unique view on health and wellness. I firmly believe in science-based practices and I am also open to exploring unconventional paths to health. My passion for my career became deeper when last year I was dealing with my own health issues. Conventional doctors failed to offer me any answers so I used my extensive toolbox and peeled back the layers to get to the root of why I wasn’t feeling well. So often we don’t feel well yet doctors can’t diagnosis us with a problem, however, we still don’t feel like ourselves! Now what? Here is where I come in. Optimizing food, nutrition, and lifestyle can have such a huge impact.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road. My education trained me very well on all things nutrition and health, however, my business skills were zero! I had a huge learning curve to overcome when I first started this business. Plus, I didn’t have the largest support system to help me out either, so I’ve had to spend a lot of time scouting those people out that can help me and be part of my tribe.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Radically Nourished story. Tell us more about the business.
I primarily help busy women who are struggling with fatigue and underlying health issues get their health and vitality back. My practice focuses on integrative and functional medical nutrition with a side of culinary nutrition and mindful based practices along with lifestyle adjustments to address the whole individual. My goal is to get down to the root cause of why someone isn’t feeling themselves and not just mask the symptoms they have come to see me for. Integrative nutrition falls within the realm of integrative medicine which addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental influences affecting a person’s health.

Within this scope, I use nutrition, genomics, food sensitivities, functional testing, nutrient status, supplements, and coaching to support the body back to dynamic balance. I believe every person that comes to see me needs something a little different than the person before, therefore, I personalize all my plans to meet my clients where they are at and what their body needs at that moment. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all diet, we all need something different. I work to find those unique differences and help my clients implement any changes they need to make in their lifestyle. All of this while providing support, compassion, positivity, and a listening ear.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Rather than rely on luck, I prefer to believe in strong intentions, visualization, belief, and going out and doing the work needed. Along with this, an unwavering desire to accomplish my goal and provide a service I so strongly believe in. This desire pushes me through those moments that don’t go the way I wanted them to.

Knowing I have a mission to complete keeps me pursuing my goals. Finally, I always remind myself that if something doesn’t go as planned that there is a reason why and that reason is leading me in a better direction.
