Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Dwyer.
Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Boulder, CO. In 1984- when I was 3, my parents divorced. My mom moved to South Dakota and my dad headed West- destination Hawaii. Once he reached San Diego, he ran out of money. He lived in his car for about a year in the Sports Arena area. In 1986, he wanted to begin a window cleaning business. He was in a bar asking other patrons “What should I call my company”? A random guy at the bar gave a suggestion- and that’s how Glass With Class Inc. was born.
Fast forward to when I was 18 – hanging out at home doing nothing. My dad called me up and said he had fired a guy and he needed me to help him bring the swing stage back to the roof of a high-rise. (This was the building that used to have SBC on it). It was terrifying starting on the ground floor and riding the stage 22 floors up to the roof. After that, I started window cleaning regularly for the business.
Fast forward again- I just celebrated my 40th birthday and have been cleaning windows for 22 years. 3 years ago, my dad retired and I have been going strong- giving the best customer service and quality work I can. I love window cleaning in San Diego. We have the best weather and the best customers!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Working with family is always hard but we have made it work for so many years. Separating business from personal life is the biggest challenge as with any family business- they are intertwined in your daily life. Learning how the each member of the team works and maintaining professionalism is key.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
When my dad retired 3 years ago, we made a decision to let go of the high-rise portion of our business and focus more on our Residential and Commercial customers and business. It was difficult telling 11 amazing customers that we can no longer service their building but our customers understood and wished us the best. With GWC, you get me, the owner, at your home who cares. I will be on-time, presentable and always have a smile. We have innovative software that provides the customer with text reminders of upcoming appointments as well as when it’s time to reschedule. We always have the best and safest equipment and are always fully insured.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have several friends who have successful businesses. We are always talking about ideas. Surrounding yourself with positive people is an easy way to move in the right direction.
