Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Mellott.
Hi Tori, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up on a working cattle ranch and being able to provide for yourself is something that is near and dear to my heart. Ben and I met through FFA, and we both appreciated the role agriculture played in our daily life and chose to stick with it after getting married. We wanted to continue working on my family’s ranch but also help others start their own AG story, so we started building chicken coops.
We started out slow but are so thankful to now be building full-time. Adding new designs to the mix, including our fully covered and western coops, has been very rewarding.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It took a couple years to get routines down and to work out the kinks, but through the hardships we are so grateful to be working together as a family every day. It has gotten a little stressful at times between learning to juggle running a business, helping out on the ranch, and making time for family. But we wouldn’t have it any other way!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We take pride in building affordable coops that will last. Anyone can keep chickens as long as they have a safe place to be. Just a heads up, they are the gateway to everything farm related!
Customers are able to customize your order to what will fit best into your chicken experience. Need a run to keep everyone safe 24/7, you got it. Just need a coop so the birds can roost up at night after a day of free-ranging, done!
We typically build per order so we are able to tweak our builds for people’s needs, the only thing we will not do is directly copy someone else’s design. We feel strongly about this and appreciate when people understand where we are coming from.
Aside from our primary builds, we also like to change the pace a bit sometimes and design something new. This innovative side is fun to unlock and is how we started our western coop. If you ever have a fun request, we would love to hear it to get our creative clocks ticking!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Implementing our previous work experiences and tweaking it to our current situation has been vital. When needing more insight, family members always have fun ideas and we have found SCORE San Diego has helpful individuals and classes.
