Meet Herschel Arcelao of Ethos One in Mira Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Herschel Arcelao.

Herschel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been into letters since I was in elementary school, I was that kid who helped my classmates when it came to learning cursive… I was just always writing!

One thing leads to another and after high school I started a clothing line based on my artwork called Callin Shots Clothing. I then got into doing a show here and there, and before I knew it, I was doing a whole bunch of shows in my hometown Mira Mesa and all over San Diego.

Within the last five years, I’ve really focused on my art. I’ve done multiple solo shows, and I now do a show once a week at different venues all around San Diego.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothings easy… I want to say my advantage was that I wanted it more than anyone else…I just kept it pushing and used that energy to create.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ethos One – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a letter artist. I specialize in calligraphy and do letter jobs, murals, logos, designs, etc. for different companies looking for a fresh new take on the classic Old English type font.

What I do with letters is a lost art… 90 percent of other companies just type their shit up on Adobe… I’ve spent 15 years, three hours a day minimum on practicing my craft…

I write my name whenever and anywhere I can so once you see my work, you’ll know right away it was done by me.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Ever since the beginning, my plans haven’t changed… the goal has always been to get as many eyes possible back onto art, and if I hustle hard enough, all those eyes would catch onto my art.

I’m hoping to get more recognized within these next years, and I plan to do so authentically– one handshake and one letter a time. I know I’ll make my way up that ladder as long as I stay authentic and true to what started it all, the art of lettering.

As far as changes goes, besides doing shows at different venues in different locations and cities… I’m always changing. I’m always trying to get better.
