Today we’d like to introduce you to Garek Ng.
Garek, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was adopted from South Korea when I was four months old to a family in Detroit, Michigan. My father is a Medical Doctor who opened up a more holistically focused medical practice after years spent in the ER and hospitals. I was raised in home that emphasized healthy habits, nutrition, and preventative medical approaches. I did not need to be convinced to pursue healthy living, as this value was instilled as part of my upbringing. I am incredibly grateful for these lessons.
In school, I pursued a career in making healthy food products but ultimately desired to pursue a career in direct patient care. I enrolled at Bastyr University, a Naturopathic Medical School here in San Diego, just recently opened my own clinic, BioMed Health Center. I am incredibly fortunate to have been able to create this business with my closest friend from school, Dr. Anna Feagan. My contribution to this clinic is an extension of everything I have learned from my father. It is a great blessing to be able to have my father as a professional mentor. I feel an obligation to share his brilliance with as many people as I can reach. For this reason, I have an incredible sense of purpose right now.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life always seems to challenge you from every angle. We preach the importance of stress management and I am very lucky to have always had an incredible support from family and friends.
More recently, Anna and I created this office from scratch with effectively no business education. That education came through experience and definitely tested our patience at times. As a small business, sometimes it feels like everyone is trying to take advantage of you. Together, our confidence has grown. We have realized that ultimately all of our successes have come from plain, hard work. I have self-trained myself in the operational side of the business. Quickbooks, POS systems, licenses, stuff like that. Anna has done a great job with advertising, graphic design, and marketing. I could not have done it without her.
As Naturopathic Doctors, we are constantly fighting for awareness and approval. These challenges will be overcome by the community getting results, and that’s what we focus on. We are so honored whenever someone trusts us with their health. It is an incredibly motivating challenge.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BioMed Health Center – what should we know?
Our philosophy. We believe in improving your health by treating the root cause of health problems. The current medical system is really great at life-saving, emergency medical care, but we feel it lacks precision when it comes to prevention and optimal, day-to-day wellness. It takes time, which the current medical model does not allow for, to investigate your health concerns at a deeper level than just treating the symptoms you present with.
We pride ourselves for our expertise in biochemistry and physiology, which represents the network of ways our bodies have evolved to operate. Our approach focuses on boosting the effectiveness and efficiency of these. So, in other words, our approach focuses on optimizing the body’s natural biological systems already in place to overcome any health obstacles rather than shutting down symptoms with pharmaceuticals. This requires us to formulate personalized treatment recommendations for each individual, which we have found is the only way to generate consistently positive outcomes.
We utilize comprehensive lab analysis to give us clues to where we need to direct our focus. In addition to providing expertise on nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle, we provide in-house procedures that can boost your health in a variety of ways. For example, IV nutrient therapy to get large doses of vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream. This is a great way to boost the immune system during the common cold. We provide natural, regenerative joint injections to address pain from wear and tear or arthritis. Also, we offer an aesthetic facial treatment called the SkinPen. This allows us to reduce wrinkles, acne scars and sunspots by using a microneedling technology to help regrow collagen.
We really enjoy providing education for our patients so that they may empower themselves by taking control of their own health. The work they put in now will go a long way towards prevention in the future.

Dr. Feagan really deserves just as much credit for any successes that this business will bring. She has been my closest friend throughout my medical training and now, as my business partner. We realized early on that we shared a similar philosophy in regards to patient care that was hard to find in medical institutions, so we created our own. It is rare to find people that you can trust in a venture like this, and I know she will always pull through for me. All the hours spent working (together to build this practice), I don’t think you can quantify the significance of that.
I have spoken about my father already. He has provided me with professional mentorship and unconditional support. It wouldn’t feel right not to give a great deal of credit to my mother and sister as well. (Dr. Feagan’s) parents have also been incredibly helpful in offering (support and guidance throughout) the startup process.
We have an incredible group of talented friends who have helped us with things like professional photography, decoration, website design, advertising and so much more. BioMed really represents family for all these reasons.
