Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan White.
Nathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Our team has extensive experience in Real Estate Development. Our story for Agess, Inc. started six years ago based on a need to restore devastated ecologic conditions. We took a focus at the Salton Sea which has been plagued with indecision and lack of creativity. Our background in architecture has given us a vital role to play in how and why decisions should be made. Most notably is Return On Investment (ROI) but that is not the only need to consider. Holistically is not just a cost benefit analysis but a fish, bird and residents’ survival which is most needed to be considered. We have brought “professional project management for a better environment” platform to the discussion since we are dealing with a health, life and safety issue in this region. We have had great success and have presented our findings to the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) Long Range Planning and Finance Committees several times. More recently we have gotten permit fees waived for the Desert Shores Restoration and Dust Mitigation Pilot Project. Our true mission is global climate change mitigation and management from schematic design to permit through to construction and management. Our company has been established to be flexible enough to meet those local and global challenges.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing is smooth or easy when dealing with ecological contamination remediation funding or enforcement. There is so much money and political power behind dirty energy and the allowance for businesses to contaminate the environment. The road for us has been even more challenging due to the scope and scale of issues we are focusing on such as toxic algae blooms, oil spill remediation, mine spill restoration and climate change as a whole. Seemingly unsolvable issues are not as difficult as they might seem. We need to work as a collective to address these challenges on a local and global scale. It been difficult for us to get find funding which is a continuing challenge. The biggest struggle is supporting my family and a full-time job while working on these efforts. The political challenges are often comical but have never been a deterrence to good design and forward thinking approached, just a road block. Learning how to navigate around people and groups that block efforts has been a great learning experience.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We manage small scale and large-scale projects from schematic design to construction documents, through permit issuance to project construction and eventual operation with associated maintenance. My experience and success started with Real Estate Development of four unit rental property and expanded to acquisition with expansion of another property. My current position as Development Services Department as a Development Project Manager is giving me the opportunity to manage and setup / Issue some of San Diego’s largest projects with Discretionary Permits such as Rezones, Plan Amendments, Coastal Development Permits, etc. We will soon be working on the next phase development of our property which is zoned for 18 units.
We are most proud of being able to submit our cross boarder Salton Sea Water Import Project Feasibility Study to the California Natural Resources Agencies Long Range Planning and Finance Committees on two separate occasions as a means of discussing how full restoration of the Salton Sea is possible and would also allow the creation of two new 40 mile rivers and the restoration of 142,000 acres of habitat at Laguna Salada west of Mexicali. Lots of renewable energy can be generated and new sea water farms can be created as a result. Additionally, last week the Imperial County Board voted to wave all permit fees for our Desert Shores Restoration and Dust Mitigation Pilot Project. We will be submitting permits in the coming weeks.
What were you like growing up?
Crazy… Have always had ideas. Have always had a lot of passion to help others and design solutions. This lead to me following a career in Architecture and I received my Bachelors and Master’s Degree in Real Estate Development. Was in stage craft in high school and managed the construction efforts. Looking back, I guess I have always taken a leadership role, project management and building focus. Have always dreamed about interstate bus and freeway network through college and space stations. My hero is Elon Musk, we can be friends…
