Meet Jane Emma of The Goodfor Company in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Emma.

Jane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a problem solver—that’s just the way my brain is wired. I love everything about the problem-solving process, which is why entrepreneurship feels so natural to me. I moved to San Francisco in 2006 to go to college but quickly realized that I’d rather learn by doing—I wasn’t too fond of sitting in class, but I loved interning and throwing myself into an assortment of projects. Over the years since, I’ve pursued many business ideas, and each idea—each experiment—exercised my creativity and sharpened my entrepreneurial skillset. I feel so lucky to have stumbled into an industry that I’ve become so passionate about. Having a sustainable water filtration system for your home has never been more important, and I feel lucky to help fill this need through my family business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started this company when I was 29-years-old with a very specific vision for what Goodfor would and would not represent. In the water filtration business, sales goals are typically the main motivator, but at Goodfor, we’re driven by customer satisfaction. It’s definitely been a mindset switch for some of our employees, but I’m proud to say that it’s pushed our team to be the best in the industry when it comes to knowledge and transparency! I only sell products that I personally stand behind and often ask myself, “Can I sleep at night knowing this is in someone’s home?” When you go against the grain a little bit, you’re bound to hear a lot of opinions, but you have to ultimately follow your own values and vision, which can be a difficult road. Every business owner would probably agree that the gig sounds way more glamorous than it is!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Goodfor Company – what should we know?
At Goodfor, we’re dedicated to helping you and your family live healthier, happier lives, starting with improving your water quality. Water is foundational, but tap water chronically exposes us to toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Our goal is to inform the public and provide the necessary tools for each person to make the best choice for their home and family. This concern for our community is why we offer absolutely free in-home water quality consultations. Our comprehensive water test gives residents a clear understanding of what is in their water and how it got there, and we then can provide the expertise to fix it.

What makes us special, outside of our outstanding certifications, is our new subscription program. Traditionally, water filtration systems could only be financed by homeowners with good credit, so many renters and low-income families had not been able to enjoy the benefits of clean water. Our all-inclusive subscription service aims to eliminate this financial barrier and give every family direct access to powerful water filtration systems with the flexibility they need to keep it for as long, or as little, as they choose. When designing the program, we focused on delivering high-value systems at an economic price point, and as a result, the program has seen tremendous success. Access to clean water should be easy—that’s what we’re here for.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m never afraid to start over. Failure sucks, but it doesn’t keep me from pushing forward to achieve my goals.
