Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Powers.
Nick, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My videography career started when I was ten years old. I played with my dad’s camera equipment, making home movies of talent shows in the living room, music videos of family jam sessions on piano and guitar, and making surf videos with friends. I loved watching back those home movies and sharing them with my friends and family. I studied studio broadcasting at Carlsbad High school (Go Lancers!), earned a scholarship to attend film school at Chapman University, and completed my degree in business management at the University of Southern California (Go Trojans!). After university, I spent five years working in Hollywood and Los Angeles, creating theatrical movie trailers, commercials, and producing content for big studios in Hollywood.
I started in the wedding industry by accident after a family friend’s videographer canceled on them last minute. My business was born there, and through word of mouth, I booked weddings on weekends while holding a full-time job in marketing. In 2018 I took a leap of faith and quit my job to pursue wedding videography full time.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting my own business has not always been a smooth ride. I had to start my business on a “trust me” approach, which is hard. My first wedding or two, I was so worried I didn’t have the right gear, so I ended up spending more money on renting equipment than I made at my weddings.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Besides sampling hundreds of wedding cakes, I am known for making brides, and grooms feel at ease and relaxed in front of the camera. At my core, I’m a storyteller. I love to capture first looks, ceremonies, vows, first dances, toasts, bridesmaids, groomsmen, and dance parties in a genuine, candid way. It is rewarding to see raw emotion through video and give couples a way to relive their special day forever.
When my couples refer me to their friends and family, it makes me feel proud of the work I’m doing and knowing they’ve trusted me to tell their love story. I’m most proud of the relationships and reputation I’m establishing for myself in Southern California. I approach couples, venues, and vendors with a spirit of collaboration and relationship building. What sets me apart is my creative eye, warm energy, and years of professional film experience. I specialize in capturing the most meaningful and heartfelt moments in people’s lives.
Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?
I think San Diego and Southern California is an excellent place for anything in the wedding industry because the weather allows for a long wedding season from March through November. San Diego has so many beautiful backdrops for filming love stories from diverse venues, landscapes, and sceneries.
Pricing:
- Most couples I work with spend anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 for a high-quality wedding video.
