Meet Vikita Poindexter of Poindexter Consulting Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vikita Poindexter.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my business 21 years ago out of a crisis. My youngest child wasn’t expected to live to be ten years old. I had just gone through a horrific divorce, working in corporate America and trying to take care of my two children while my youngest was in and out of the hospital.

I was advised that I needed to be in the office as teleworking wasn’t afforded to the female executives as it was for my male counterparts. I had a conversation with a trusted advisor and was encouraged to start my own business. Something that I had wanted to do, but due to fear and LIFE, it didn’t happen.

I’m a mom first however I needed to provide for my family. I left corporate America doing what I knew, which was human resources and started my own company. That is how PCG was born.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t smooth a road. I had to learn how to navigate through the challenges of running a business and all that entailed. I had a passion but didn’t necessarily know that was needed to run a business. I developed a core market that I would target and begin to network to get my name and business out there. Over the years, I have learned what works and what doesn’t and make the necessary adjustments.

I had to manage through this thing called “life”. I had managed through running my business and homeschooling my daughter and being in the hospital with my son. So no, it hasn’t been easy but it has been so worth it.

We have worked with businesses of all sizes from the small enterprise with less than ten employees to those whose operations are significantly larger and more complex.

I am most proud of being in business for 21 years in January. Also being an expert witness in large legal cases is a passion for me. Being able to come in as a forensic expert in HR and giving my expert opinion on multi-million dollar cases, which ultimately is the deciding factor is so rewarding.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
It doesn’t matter where you start your business. Most people start a business because it is a good idea. Entrepreneurship is not easy, which is why you see people constantly changing fields or starting new businesses. You have to constantly grow as an individual. If you want your business to sustain, you have to find your passion and turn it into a profit.

You have to give back to the city that you live and run your business out of. The larger the city the more opportunities it presents. However, you have to take the initiative and maximize those opportunities.
