Life & Work with Angela Devoy of North County San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Devoy

Hi Angela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?

I grew up as the youngest of three girls in a small farm-town in Kansas, and my artistic journey began in the hands of my gracious and creative mother. In the moments she had free from running our pizza restaurant, she introduced me to the world of art as soon as I could hold a crayon, teaching me how to draw and color. This early exposure ignited a lifelong passion within me. My dad always said that with determination, you can achieve anything. He affirmed this by earning a Master’s in Education, attaining a pilot’s license, and picking up piano at 50. As a child, I felt a deep longing to live in California and become an artist, even though I hadn’t been near the state. Following my heart, I moved to San Diego with my soulmate who I met during college. We created a little family and have spent the last 20 years navigating life and channeling creativity. While primarily working as an executive assistant at Scripps, I dedicated my free time to creating art and eventually transitioned to becoming a full-time mother and artist. San Diego is truly an inspiring place for creatives. Finding your own spotlight can sometimes feel daunting; however, there’s always space to shine, as each artist offers a unique voice and perspective. I am sincerely thankful for this opportunity to connect with and contribute my story to this beautiful community and city.

My inspiration is rooted in my family and heritage. My 101 year old grandmother, with her strong drive, stories, garden flowers and creative ideas, constantly kindles my artistic vision. The fascinating world of archaeology – our history as humans and ancient artifacts, and a profound love for the Earth and its elements mold my creativity. My two sons remind me daily to wonder with curiosity. I am also inspired by my dreams at night and the great outdoors. Through my creativity, I embody a love for the planet and for all living things, as we are all interconnected. Because we are all in this moment together, my message is one of love and support.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely there are struggles. You can’t avoid them, but there are ways to make them less painful. Life is a journey filled with both light and darkness. In art terminology, this is known as chiaroscuro, which is my favorite technique. It involves using the contrast between darkness and light to create balance and vitality in a piece. I want to share the transformative tools that have helped me navigate through periods of darkness. My hope is to offer comfort and inspiration whether personal or professional, because everyone is dealing with something, and we need to be kind to each other and ourselves.

Through the trials, I’ve learned that a key step is genuinely recognizing your repressions in order to completely understand and improve yourself. By diving in and holding space for the neglected parts, no matter how difficult, a balance is formed leading towards wholeness – your core being. Embracing the journey and really getting to know yourself develops strength, wisdom, and compassion. It can be challenging, but it builds your solid foundation for success.

Life is ever-changing, and being fully open to these changes allows growth and the ability to find your divine path. The more you do this and trust the process, the more clear things will be. Connect with those who inspire and support you, but remember the milestones begin when you decide, and nobody else can do it for you. Literally like when you were a baby learning to take your first steps. You had people rooting you on and supporting you, but it was up to you to achieve it. Taking time to pause and listen—whether it’s through nature, meditation/ prayer, or simply moments of stillness. Working towards small achievable goals keeps movement forward even in the face of adversity. Every struggle faced is a part of your unique journey to learn. Walk your path with patience and compassion, knowing that each step is shaping you into a stronger, wiser, and more loving being. It is much easier said than done, but your work on the inside will show in your work everywhere else.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My art is a blend of natural elements and calming aesthetics. I primarily work with Natural Earth dry pigments and oil, often incorporating dried herbs, flowers, and other natural elements to create organic textures and relaxing shapes. My intention is to honor the simplicity and roots that bind us to this beautiful world. Additionally, I illustrate children’s stories and cards using watercolor pencils, aiming to bring grounding and happiness through my work. With the seasons, I love to celebrate by highlighting a collection of original art stationery on my website. I find the tradition of handwriting notes to be deeply beautiful and meaningful.

At present, I am immersed in a large commission project—a painting of a scenic view that captures a cherished childhood memory for a client. This piece will bring a beloved place into her home, allowing her to embrace it daily. I love to create personal art and to bond with clients about the treasured meanings behind their requests. I am also engaged in illustration work for a musical project, exploring new creative horizons. I love teaching art classes aimed at enhancing flow and inner creativity and volunteering at my own children’s school.

Art, for me, is a natural form of expression that is both therapeutic and freeing. To deepen this connection, I am back at school pursuing a degree as an Expressive Arts Therapist. My goal is to help others unearth their authenticities through art, music, dance, writing and other expressive forms, fostering individuality and inner peace. Art can play a pivotal role in helping people discover (or remember) their truest inner self rather than conforming to external expectations. Art can also bring light to us through some of our darkest times. By being open and allowing unbiased support, one can learn to let go and just be.

What makes you happy?
Happiness starts from within, nourished by what we feed our body, mind, and soul. It takes gentle care, and to me, gratitude is a powerful form of “happy” energy.
What makes me happiest is the simple yet profound joy of connecting with loved ones and engaging in my creative pursuits. Whether it’s spending quality time with my family and friends, immersing myself in art, or exploring nature, these moments bring a deep love and a sense of fulfillment to my life.

In sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others to keep it simple (as my grandfather taught me), and find beauty in the world around us and within us. Creativity is a sacred gift that we are all born with in some way. I am grateful to share my own abilities and connect with you.
