Meet Clayton Wheeler of Board & Brew Specialty Sandwiches

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clayton Wheeler.

Clayton, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up on Board & Brew through my high school years. Friends and I always went to Del Mar after a long surf and craved the Turkado and Baja Chicken. As my interest in a restaurant career grew, I was always amazed at how simple, consistent and delicious Board & Brew delivered its product.

Fast forward to 2013 and I was able to franchise my first location with my partner Craig Applegate and Board & Brew Restaurant Group. We soon after signed a territory agreement to help expanding the concept throughout San Diego. Our first location was in Carlsbad Village and have since expanded to a total of five franchised locations, with two new locations planned for 2018. Board & Brew has stayed true to its roots; laid-back, value oriented with a consistent product. And I still crave it daily.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any business that experiences growth has its struggles. However, we have been able to navigate the changes and challenges along the way without it effecting our staff or customers. The constantly changing laws in California make it difficult to make quick, necessary adjustments. This is where our staff and management team have excelled, never hesitating to change our old habits and make room for the new and improved.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Board & Brew Specialty Sandwiches – what should we know?
Board & Brew Specialty Sandwiches is known for its simple straightforward menu. Sandwiches, salads, wraps, and craft beer. Our Turkado is near legendary status and fans have even referred to our Secret Sauce as ‘The Tears of a Unicorn’. It’s that good. As a company we maintain a Southern California vibe with an inviting, family friendly environment. Whether you just got done with a surf or are out to lunch in between business, Board & Brew fits into everyone’s schedule. We keep our food fresh and made to order, but your sandwich will never take more than 8 minutes. We wanted something different to add to the design of our stores and we found that with recycled skateboard tiles by Art of Board (artofboard.com). This has worked great for our bar backslash and other accents around the restaurant.

We stay true to the community by sponsoring local schools and sports programs, and regularly do fundraiser events at our restaurants contributing 20% of sales back to your cause!
