Meet Arika Daniels and Denise Scatena of Scatena Daniels Communications in Old Town

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arika Daniels and Denise Scatena.

Arika and Denise, please share your story with us.
Arika: Denise and I met 10 years ago while sitting on the board of the San Diego and Imperial Counties chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. We noticed right off the bat that our work styles not only mirrored one another, but that we also complimented each other.

Denise: It was like it was meant to be! We were both independent consultants at the time and started partnering on projects, then going after new clients together. We joke around that this was our dating period, then, we got engaged when we moved our offices into the same building about six months later.

Arika: Then, we officially got “married” in December 2009 when we combined our offices and incorporated as Scatena Daniels Communications. It was a whirlwind romance, but it was a nice way to really get to know one another and see how we would work together.

Denise: We call ourselves work wives and nothing can be further from the truth. We literally are in contact at least six days per week!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Arika: Nothing is ever smooth and everyone has had struggles, but we have been honestly, lucky to have more highs than lows. We have been blessed with great clients and dedicated employees every step of the way.

Denise: I like to say that the only constant thing in life is change. When I started my PR career over 20 years ago, things were a lot different. Compare it to when we started our business, the ways that people consume information is vastly different as well. We’ve had to adapt our services, strategies and delivery model to meet needs of our clients, and ultimately the audience members we reach for our clients.

Scatena Daniels Communications – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Arika: Scatena Daniels is a full-service, integrated communications agency providing strategic campaigns that connect businesses with their customers in meaningful ways. For over a decade, we’ve proudly worked with forward-thinking brands representing a wide range of industries, including arts and culture, education, finance, healthcare, professional services, real estate and philanthropy.

Denise: We are known for having great relationships with our media colleagues and guaranteed work delivered to our clients with passion, industry savvy and a personal touch.

Arika: I’d say our clients also really love our transparency and efficiency. We are very forthcoming with our communications and reporting and are considerate of their budgets. We are also big collaborators. We love connecting our clients with the community to not only help push their brand further but to make an impact.

Denise: I am proud that our team makes sure that our strategies and recommendations are inclusive of all communities in San Diego County. We take into consideration various languages and cultural perspectives that make our region unique.

Arika: What sets us apart is our ability to hustle and get the job done. We are creative and strategic, but at the end of the day, we will outwork anyone else.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Arika: In the last year, we have really stepped into the healthcare arena working with big brands such as AMN Healthcare and Sutter Health Plus. We are really loving this space and are looking forward to supporting additional healthcare and life science brands in the future.

Denise: We are expanding our client services to include media buying and content marketing. Our clients know us for our local media outreach work – last year alone we booked over 400 media interviews! However, we find that when we’re able to craft a more comprehensive campaign mixing paid, earned, shared, and owned media strategies, our clients see a raised awareness for their brands and improves executive visibility. Our team is also securing national and regional coverage for clients as well, in addition to our local media efforts.
