Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Kim
Hi Jonathan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Jonathan Kim’s journey in music began with a performance at Carnegie Hall with his middle school orchestra and playing for his church youth band. These early experiences sparked a passion that led him to perform at venues across Southern California, including the Anaheim Convention Center and The Roxy Theatre, alongside artists like Trevor Davis, Richard Sellers, and Nathan Brown.
Jonathan’s career is marked by his dual roles as a performer and educator. Since 2010, he has taught music as a private instructor and at institutions like La Habra Music and Clavier Music Academy, inspiring students with his diverse musical background. Holding a Bachelor’s in Music from Biola University and a Master’s in Theology from Talbot School of Theology, he combines his musical expertise with spiritual leadership, leading worship at various venues, including Hume Lake Christian Camps and several San Diego churches.
Starting as a Music and Creative Director for churches, Jonathan expanded his influence by offering private and group lessons in his community. His multi-instrumental talents and diverse experiences allowed him to teach a wide range of musical genres. After over a decade in church ministry, he founded his own music education business in North County San Diego, growing from 12 to 50 students, teaching guitar, drums, piano, voice, and bass guitar.
Jonathan’s story is one of passion, growth, and a commitment to fostering creativity and musical self-expression in others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Becoming your own boss sounds very exciting and liberating, but there are definitely some caveats and bumps along the way where you have to learn as you go. With an entrepreneurial spirit, I always had a drive to learn and achieve financial independence, which motivated me to delve into the intricacies of running a business. I spent countless hours reading books on entrepreneurship, investing in personal growth, furthering my education, and making impactful connections within my network.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to embrace the entire process, including both the highs and lows. Failure is expected, but it is not the ultimate outcome of your hard work and pursuit of a better life. Early on, I faced numerous challenges—from navigating the complexities of business logistics to managing client relationships and expectations. Each mistake was a learning opportunity, teaching me resilience and adaptability.
Developing a short-term memory for setbacks was crucial. By not dwelling on the bumps in the road, I could stay focused on my long-term goals of success and client satisfaction. This mindset allowed me to refine my services continuously, ensuring that my clients remained excited and engaged with the music education I provided.
Investing in myself through further education and networking proved invaluable. The insights gained from books and the advice from seasoned entrepreneurs helped me avoid common pitfalls and adopt best practices. Building a supportive network offered guidance and encouragement, helping me navigate the uncertainties of entrepreneurship.
In retrospect, the journey of starting my own business has been as much about personal growth as it has been about professional success. Each challenge has strengthened my resolve and deepened my commitment to providing exceptional music education. While the path was not always smooth, the lessons learned along the way have been instrumental in shaping the business and leader I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a creative individual passionate about teaching and sharing the transformative power of the arts and music. I believe that music is a universal language that connects people across different backgrounds and beliefs, and this belief is at the core of my work. My mission is to foster this connection through personalized and engaging music education.
In my music education business, I stand out by offering a tailored approach to teaching a wide range of genres, catering to each student’s personal interests. This individualized method ensures that students are not only learning but also enjoying the process. Once my students have built foundational skills and confidence with their instruments, I challenge them to tackle pieces that initially seem intimidating. This not only boosts their confidence but also deepens their appreciation for music and their chosen instrument.
What truly sets my business apart is the emphasis on community and shared experiences. I organize annual recitals and music camps that provide students with platforms to showcase their talents and share their musical journey with friends and family. These events are designed to be more than just performances—they are celebrations of music and community.
At our recitals, the atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming. We have Korean food catered, an open coffee bar offering fresh pour-over coffee, and a lively, supportive audience that stays engaged throughout the performances. Students perform pieces they have personally selected, making each recital a unique and meaningful experience.
Our music camps further enhance the communal and creative spirit. We invite the community to join us for a week of immersive music education. Campers participate in ensemble singing, learn rhythmic patterns with bucket drums, form and perform in rock bands, and create fun, memorable music videos. Each camp is uniquely tailored to the interests and creativity of the participants, making it a distinctive and enriching experience.
By creating these spaces where music can be shared and celebrated, I aim to make music education a communal and joyful journey. My approach not only teaches technical skills but also fosters a deeper connection to music and a sense of belonging within a creative community. This, I believe, is what makes my music education business truly unique where clients are sharing with other families about how fun and great their kids are enjoying learning music from Hope Music Studios.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The best advice I’ve learned is to use what you’re great at, and continue to be great at it. People value you for what you bring to the table, and if you trust in your God-given gifts and diligently hone those skills, you will reap the fruits of your labor. This journey will look different for everyone, but the core principle remains the same: follow the art, not just the dream.
Here are some key points of advice for those looking to embark on their own creative or entrepreneurial journey:
Identify Your Strengths: Understand what you excel at and focus on those strengths. Your unique talents are what set you apart, and they will be the foundation of your success.
Trust in Your Gifts: Believe in your abilities and the unique perspective you bring. Your confidence in your skills will inspire others to trust and value your work.
Continuous Improvement: Steward your talents by constantly seeking to improve. Invest time in learning, practicing, and refining your skills. The effort you put into developing your abilities will directly impact the quality and appeal of your work.
Create and Innovate: Never stop creating. Whether it’s through art, music, or any other medium, continuous creation and innovation will keep you relevant and engaging. People are drawn to fresh, original work, so always strive to bring something new to the table.
Follow the Art: Focus on the process of creation rather than just the end goal. The journey of making and innovating is where true fulfillment and success lie. When you are passionate about the art itself, your dedication will shine through, attracting those who appreciate and resonate with your work.
Embrace the Journey: Understand that success is a process filled with both ups and downs. Embrace each step, learn from setbacks, and celebrate progress. The path may not always be smooth, but perseverance and a positive mindset will carry you forward.
Build a Community: Surround yourself with supportive individuals who appreciate and encourage your work. Networking and building relationships within your field can provide valuable opportunities and insights.
By following these principles, you can carve out a successful and fulfilling path, drawing people who are genuinely interested in what you have to offer. Remember, the key to lasting success is to remain true to your unique talents and continuously strive for excellence.
