Lakeisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a nurse practitioner and have over 14 years of experience caring for patients. I truly enjoy being able to provide compassionate care to patients in need. In addition to working full-time at UC San Diego Health, I started my legal nurse consulting business in January of 2022. I was approached by several contacts who knew my knowledge and expertise and wanted my input on pending legal cases. As a result, I began researching legal nurse consulting and discovered it is a newer niche of nursing but certainly in demand. I created Next Level Nurse Consulting, LLC, and provide a variety of legal nurse consulting services to attorney clients nationwide. In short period of time, I have been blessed to have many attorney clients from across the country and to be able to help them by sharing my medical expertise and knowledge. It is also great to learn more about the law and the legal system from my attorney clients. I look forward to future opportunities to continue to expand my business and work with new clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a small business owner is not for the faint of heart. It requires drive, determination, dedication, and perseverance. Many of the successes I currently enjoy are as a result of my consistent efforts in marketing, networking, and establishing and nurturing business relationships over time. I have been fortunate to have a strong support system in family, friends, and fellow legal nurse consultants. It truly does take a village to continue on the path towards your dreams.
We’ve been impressed with Next Level Nurse Consulting, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is a legal nurse consulting business. I work with attorney clients nationwide to provide medical expertise, knowledge, information, and education on medical related legal cases. We primarily work with attorneys who specialize in medical malpractice, medical negligence, personal injury, and worker’s compensation. Some of the services that Next Level Nurse Consulting, LLC offers include: 1) providing nurses to observe defense medical exams (DMEs), 2) providing legal team trainings and “lunch and learns” on specified topics, 3) assisting with expert witness location, 4) summarizing medical records contents, 5) explaining medical records in an in-depth manner, 6) organizing medical records, 7) creating medical chronologies and 8) screening cases for merit. My business is known for providing prompt responses and communication and producing high-quality work product. What sets my business apart from other legal nurse consulting businesses is that I have a wide knowledge base, which enables me to provide expertise to my clients with ease. Additionally, I have a vast network of fellow legal nurse consultants, physicians, and other healthcare providers. If there is a specific need or particular question, I am typically able to connect my attorney clients with colleagues who can provide further assistance. Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I find mentoring to be extremely important and valuable in any profession. Having someone who has more experience in a specific field than you is priceless in providing guidance, insight, and support early on in a professional venture. I would recommend searching professional organizations to see what mentorship programs may be available. I am grateful to currently be a part of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) inaugural mentorship program. I am paired with a mentor who has been successful in legal nurse consulting for decades. She is available to answer questions, provide support, and also to hold me accountable to my professional goals. I am truly grateful for this incredible opportunity and feel having a mentor has provided the additional support I needed to flourish and grow as a business owner. I highly encourage anyone in a new role to seek out a mentor and to be open to advice and support from other trusted successful professionals.
