Community Highlights: Meet Leland Ferguson of Back Pain Relief Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leland Ferguson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Dr. Leland Ferguson is the founder of Back Pain Relief Chiropractic, a practice born from his personal history as a competitive multi-sport athlete and his first-hand experience with the restorative power of chiropractic care.

The Foundation: Athleticism and Injury
Leland’s journey began as a multi-sport athlete in high school, competing for four years in cross country, track, and wrestling. These years of high-impact competition led to several knee injuries. The trend continued at UCSD, where he competed in club cycling. When chronic knee pain eventually sidelined him from racing, traditional medical advice suggested only medication and rest—an answer that didn’t align with his desire to remain active.

The Turning Point: A Clinical Internship
Seeking a more functional solution, Leland took an internship with a chiropractor. It was here that he experienced a breakthrough; after receiving knee adjustments, his mobility returned, allowing him to resume training and racing. This experience shifted his perspective on performance therapy and planted the seed for his future career.

Professional Transition and Perseverance
Before entering the chiropractic field, Leland spent a decade in the biopharmaceutical industry. Despite a personal distaste for traditional schooling, his passion for helping others overcome similar physical setbacks eventually won out. He returned to academia to complete his necessary coursework and graduated from chiropractic school with a specific mission: to provide specialized care for extremity injuries—focusing on shoulders, hips, and knees.

Two Decades of Impact
Now celebrating 20 years in practice, Dr. Ferguson combines professional expertise with the mindset of an active competitor. He remains a “multi-sport enthusiast,” regularly participating in:

Obstacle Course Racing: Tough Mudders and Spartan Races.

Technical Sports: Rock climbing and golf.

Practice Philosophy
Dr. Ferguson’s vision is rooted in the belief that routine chiropractic care is essential for maintaining a body that is healthy, fit, and injury-free. He treats his patients not just as clinical cases, but as individuals striving for peak performance, ensuring they can pursue their own passions for adventure and fun just as he does.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey was not a smooth one, defined primarily by two major hurdles: a long-standing hesitation to return to academia and a period of intense personal hardship during chiropractic school.

Academic Inertia: After years of avoiding school due to a lack of interest, I had to cultivate the self-discipline and clarity of purpose required to eventually apply and commit to a rigorous program.

Personal and Financial Strain: While in chiropractic school, I managed the dual burden of demanding coursework and the role of a primary caregiver for my spouse, who was suffering from a debilitating spinal condition. Balancing financial pressures with the physical and emotional toll of caregiving was a significant test of my character.

The Takeaway: These experiences instilled a deep sense of endurance and a “journey-focused” mindset. I’ve learned that achieving big goals requires the mental fortitude to handle inevitable setbacks while maintaining a positive perspective.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Back Pain Relief Chiropractic?
Our differentiator is a commitment to active listening and immediate clinical impact. We believe that truly hearing a patient’s health goals is the first step toward solving their pain. To that end, we’ve designed a first-visit experience that goes far beyond a simple consultation; it is a full diagnostic and therapeutic session. By integrating traditional chiropractic with soft tissue therapy and cold laser technology, we’re able to achieve results in the extremities—shoulders to knees—that feel almost like a ‘magic touch’ to our patients because of how quickly they notice the change. We bridge the gap between traditional chiropractic and sports medicine. We specialize in treating complex extremity injuries—shoulders, hips, and limbs—without surgery or medication. What really makes us unique is our ‘all-in’ initial visit; we don’t just talk about the problem, we address it the same day with X-rays, therapy, and laser treatment. My goal is always to provide a level of care that produces immediate, physical results, ensuring our patients feel heard and, more importantly, feel better immediately.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that success is a marathon of endurance and connection. It’s about maintaining a relentless work ethic while keeping the perspective necessary to stay ‘above water’ during lean times. I’ve realized that you can’t reach the finish line alone—developing deep, authentic relationships is what sustains a practice—and if you aren’t finding joy in the process, the destination won’t matter. It’s about balancing professional rigor with a genuine passion for the journey.
