Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Hobson
Hi Sean, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am Attorney Sean M. Hobson, and here is the short version of my legal career.
I decided to go to law school and became a lawyer because I am passionate about helping people; asserting and defending the rights of people to ensure justice is served. I received my JD from Thomas Jefferson School of Law, class of 2016. During my 2L and 3L years, worked as a Certified Legal Intern with the San Diego County’s Office of the Primary Public Defender, making my first every appearance in a criminal felony case at the North County Division of the San Diego County Superior Court of California.
I started working for a criminal defense firm, where had a caseload of clients ranging from 80 to 120 at any given time. There I was typically in court every day, across the county. There were even days when I had to be in court during the morning at one location, and then back in court during the afternoon at a different location. During that time, I filed and a criminal appeal before the California Court of Appeal, 4th Appellate District, Division 1. To summarize, I received 10 years of practical experience in my first 3 years of practice.
My law practice consists of cases that fall into two general categories of law: (1) Criminal Law; and (2) Special Education. In criminal defense practice, It is important to understand that I do not defend crimes—I defend people and fight for their rights. Everyone deserves a strong advocate who will fight for their constitutional rights, no matter the circumstances.
My passion to advocate for students and their Special Education stems from the same commitment to justice. Every child has the right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). When a student’s right to a FAPE has been denied by a school district, I filed for Due Process with the Office of Administrative Hearings, Special Education Division, asserting the a districts violations under the IDEA and California Law. I am dedicated to helping families learn how to navigate the Special Education legal system to ensure their children receive the services and support they need to ensure they have all the skills and tools they need for the transition into society as an functioning adult that can be productive member of the community.
Starting my own practice allowed me to focus on the areas of law that matter most to me. Whether I am in a courtroom defending a client against criminal allegations or representing student that has been denied a FAPE under the IDEA and the California Code of Education, my goal is always the same—to stand up for those who need a voice.
I hold a seat on the Board of Directors for Thomas Jefferson School of Law Alumni Association, and I am the chair the Board’s Annual Judicial Mixer and Alumni Awards Reception.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any attorney, I have faced obstacles in my career, but each challenge has reinforced my commitment to fighting for my clients.
In Criminal Defense, one of the biggest obstacles is overcoming public perception. Too often, people assume that a person accused of a crime is guilty, without considering their rights, circumstances, or the flaws in the justice system. My job is to ensure that my clients receive a fair defense, no matter what they have been accused of. Fighting against bias is a challenge, but it is one I take on every day because I believe in the fundamental right to a fair trial.
In Special Education FAPE cases, the biggest obstacle is securing services a students from school districts all across California, so the students do not fall. This requires not only working with school districts that do not the resources to provide services and dealing with school districts that fail to provide a student a FAPE for arbitrary reasons. Parents typically feel powerless when they know neither their rights nor how to navigate the Special Education arena. Parents feel like they have not voice when a school district ignores parent concerns during an IEP meeting, even though a parent is a member of the IEP Team. It takes persistence, deep legal knowledge, and a willingness to push back against bureaucracy to make sure students get the education and support they are entitled to under the law.
Beyond the legal battles, another obstacle is the emotional toll that comes with advocating for people in some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Whether it is someone facing criminal charges or a family fighting for their child’s education, the stakes are high. But that is exactly why I do this work—because overcoming these challenges can change lives.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What sets me apart as an attorney is my unwavering commitment to defending people, not crimes. I believe that everyone deserves a fair chance, and I fight relentlessly to protect my clients’ rights, whether they are facing criminal charges or struggling to secure proper educational services for their child. I approach every case with integrity, dedication, and a personalized strategy tailored to each client’s unique circumstances.
I specialize in criminal defense and special education law. In my criminal defense practice, I handle cases ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies, ensuring my clients receive fair treatment under the law. In Special Education FAPE cases, I advocate for children with disabilities, helping families obtain the support, accommodations, and services their child is entitled to under the law. However, in all cases, I strive to ensure the best possible result of each client. Because no two cases are alike, nor are any two clients, the focus and strategy for each case changes based on the particular client’s needs and desired outcome that can be reasonably achieved.
What I want people to know is that I am not just a lawyer—I am an advocate. I stand up for my clients when they feel unheard, powerless, or overwhelmed. Whether you need a strong defense in court or someone to fight for your child’s education, I will be in your corner, committed to achieving the best possible outcome for you and your family.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is protecting the rights of my clients and ensuring they receive fair and just treatment under the law. Whether I am defending someone in a criminal case or advocating for a child with special education needs, my focus is always on making sure they have a voice and the legal support they deserve.
Justice, integrity, and advocacy are at the core of everything I do. I believe that everyone—regardless of their circumstances—deserves strong representation and someone willing to fight for their rights. My goal is to stand up for those who feel unheard, to challenge unfair systems, and to make a real difference in the lives of my clients and their families.
That matters most to me because the legal system can be overwhelming, intimidating, and, at times, unfair. Without proper representation, people can easily be taken advantage of, lose their rights, or be denied the opportunities they deserve. Whether in criminal defense or special education law, my role is to level the playing field and ensure my clients are treated fairly.
In the Criminal Defense context, a person’s freedom, future, and reputation are on the line. I believe that no one should be judged solely by their worst moment, and everyone deserves a strong advocate who will fight for their rights, no matter the charges they face.
In Special Education FAPE cases, children with disabilities and their families often struggle to get the support they need from the education system. Schools may deny services, ignore parental concerns, or fail to provide an appropriate learning environment. I fight to ensure that every child has access to the education and opportunities they are legally entitled to.
At the end of the day, what drives me is the belief that justice should not be reserved for the privileged—it should be accessible to everyone. That is why I do what I do.
