Today we’d like to introduce you to Abrina Guaderrama.
Hi Abrina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Well, I guess it started off when I won a performance contest when I was 18 years old at City walk in Universal City. After that, I started experimenting in studios. I finally moved to LA when I was 20 and that’s when I went full throttle in the music industry. It’s been a long journey but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I’ve been blessed enough to tour the world and there’s been some pretty amazing moments!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In doing music for a living, you are always going to encounter many obstacles. I’ve had people steal money from me, I’ve had so many people tell me no or that I wasn’t good enough. As a woman, you encounter a lot of men who want to help you if you give them what they want in return and the list goes on. You have to weave through a lot of people who don’t have your best interest and who don’t understand your vision. It’s really the strongest and the people who have the best team around them who end up making it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer, songwriter, and actress, and I do r&b music infused with Latin. I am a Latina from San Diego, CA now residing in La. I am very proud of the music I’ve created and how I’ve stuck to my vision and my true artistry no matter what. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I write or co-write all of my music. I am pretty much involved in everything from scratch, even when we pick the sounds in the production and I also write my own video treatments. Most people have big teams to help them with every level of production and then to the world with campaigns, but I’m pretty much my own one-woman army with some help from my amazing small team! Not to mention I cross genres with r&b and Latin, so I love doing music that’s different and fresh!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I wish I knew it was a marathon and not a race. The goal is to slowly build and to really budget yourself. Don’t spend money on ridiculous things at first. Understand that you can build yourself a base first without really any money. Also, most artists rush the development process. It’s extremely important to have a clear vision in your sound and style and not waiver. But the most important part of this business is your team. Make sure they have your best interest and make sure they know what they are doing and not wasting your time!
