Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Lin.
Hi Cheryl, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been in the fitness and dance industry since 1998. I am a certified Instructor with Les Mills NZ, Fitness Australia, REPs NZ, ZUU, Barre Body Australia, Total Barre, and is Yoga Alliance certified 200RYT, Pre/Post Natal Yoga RPYT, Yin Yoga, FlyHigh Yoga™, Ayurveda for Yoga Teachers as well as Aerial and Sound Healing.
I started out my teaching career at Les Mills in New Zealand and eventually founded my own group fitness and personal training company Eat Train Love in Singapore where I really wanted to share my passion, knowledge and simple philosophy of eating well, training hard and loving yourself. By 2019, Eat Train Love had expanded into a wider online and international community, and supported 2 non-profit groups in Siem Reap through the ETL For Good charity project. Rooted in sparking positive change and goodwill through fitness, Eat Train Love went beyond being “just another fitness company”: Eat Train Love was a support system, a team, a community and a mantra to live by.
Over the years, I travelled to attend training workshops, assisted in teacher trainings, taught at fitness/yoga retreats and taken part in overseas races. This equipped me with the experience to work with various body types, capabilities and cultures. I also had the privilege of being on stage for Cotton on Body, Victoria Secret’s Train Like an Angel campaign and Adidas, and leading numerous community and charity events as an ambassador for lululemon Singapore.
I moved to San Diego at the end of 2019 and had to take my practice and my teaching completely online because of the pandemic. After a brief pause to have my first child, I was really excited to be back in the creative process of teaching again. I went on to complete another certification in Ayurveda to enhance my work in Yoga Therapy and Sound Healing. And today, I am really grateful to be where I’m at, navigating motherhood but still being able to do what I love and work with such wonderful students and clients.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. The pandemic was definitely a huge one, especially having just moved to San Diego and being so far from everyone and everything I knew. Being a new mum was also a struggle, so many unknown challenges and tests of patience.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a certified Yoga and Pilates instructor, and Sound Healing Therapist. I specialise in pre and post natal fitness, so I guide women through strong, healthy pregnancies and how to regain post partum strength and mobility. This is something I am really proud of, having worked with a lot of women through fertility struggles, and also helping many of my clients repair their abdominal separation. I also specialise in sound healing therapy which is such a powerful modality for nervous system regulation. I recently presented a Sound Healing workshop at a womens’ leadership conference and it was a great experience getting a room full of executives to completely relax.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learnt a lot of grace and acceptance from it. I had just moved here, and before I had the chance to make friends or find a community I was completely isolated. So I had to rediscover what gave me purpose, how I could “move through” rather than resist the things that were beyond my control, and I also allowed myself grace to just be (feeling all the feelings of displacement, isolation, apathy).
