Today we’d like to introduce you to Sammie Augusto.
Hi Sammie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Music has been a constant in my life ever since I was born. My father has been in a punk band called Dead on The Wire for my entire life so I practically grew up with him playing guitar and singing me songs. My mom always took me to shows and got me into a large variety of genres, yet punk has always been the more prominent part of music in my life. I began taking music more seriously at 8 and I joined School of Rock and I quickly picked up drums, guitar, bass, ukulele, and later on piano. This was the foundation to my music career and I was completely sold. Later I created a metal cover band called Wasted Years which I was in from 8 to 11 years old. Then came along my pop punk band Flailing Idiot which I started when I was 9. Recently in the last year I formed another band called The Cherry Bombs with my best friends from middle school. Playing music is all I want to do! In the midst of all of this I am always preforming on stage in musicals and other types of music related shows.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been through a lot of personal struggles along the way, these struggles include a lot of loss. My Uncle Jameson’s heart gave out when I was eleven years old, this has strained my life greatly. My Uncle and I had such a strong bond, we were so close that it felt as though I had lost a part of me. From loosing my Uncle I began writing more music, this has impacted me greatly as I found solace in writing songs. Recently I lost my Papa which has most definitely impacted my heart and soul. Music has never been a struggle for me and has been most definitely a smooth road, yet life isn’t the same. Music is my way of expelling my feelings and creating a space for others who have gone through the same things.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a musician. I play five instruments and I play in my bands Flailing Idiot, and The Cherry Bombs. I am most proud of how far I have come at such a young age and I think thats something that sets me apart from others. I try my hardest to master my craft and to write songs that others can relate to and come to for comfort, just how music is for me.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am a huge nerd when it comes to books and movies, especially fantasy books and films. I make a lot of maps and I really enjoy cartography, they are all hung up around my room. I also like making dioramas as well, I just really enjoy hands on creative activities.
