Today we’d like to introduce you to Noor Amiri.
Hi Noor, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Kabul, Afghanistan, I learned how to cook from my mother. She always inspired me to be creative and never be afraid to get dirty in the kitchen. We didn’t have much growing up and it was difficult to maintain feeding the family of 12 sometimes. I always loved to cook and one day have a business of my own. It was a great passion of mine, but it was never the right time. Before the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, I went to study veterinarian in Bulgaria. After my studies, I wanted to go back to Afghanistan. However, I couldn’t go back to Afghanistan because of the war. Instead, I went to Italy and lived there for seven years. After seven years, I moved and lived in Australia and became a citizen and worked for Ford Motor company. In 1991, I moved to America and decided that this is the country to make your dreams come true. So I opened my first restaurant in Poway, CA in 2005. At the time, my family and I lived in Temecula and the commute was too much, so we sold the one in Poway and opened one in Temecula for about eight years. We decided to relocate back to Rancho Bernardo for six years. During covid pandemic, I sold the Rancho Bernardo location in early 2021 and reopened bigger and better in La Jolla. This is the restaurant I have always dreamt of.
I love to travel and live in different countries and learn about their food. So one day, I can share the culture to my family. My two beautiful daughters are very cultured and always eager to travel and learn.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely had struggles along the way, it’s never easy to open a business from scratch and maintain building it. But I have l family and friends to support me. Furthermore, I’ve always had the mindset to run a business of my own and obstacles that ever got in the way, I always found ways to overcome them. With the support of my wife and two daughters, I was able to fulfill my dreams. It means the world to me to share that with them and the world.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Pamir Kabob House is known after the Pamir Mountains in Central Asia. I always loved the name of Pamir because it was one of the highest mountain ranges in the world and always had high hopes that my restaurant would be in the highest range in the world. Even though it is a Kabob House, we specialize in lamb stews. We do offer chicken stews as well as seafood and beef entrees. Our kabobs are our best sellers but our signature dishes are the Qorma dishes (Stews). We offer a range of variety dishes that can accommodate most of our clientele. We offer gluten-free options, vegan, pescatarian, and kid-friendly.
I am most proud of the journey that we accomplished in the past 16 years.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 10-15 years, I hope to open another branch of Pamir Kabob House and make it more successful than it is now.
