Hi Daniela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Daniela Vianna, 28. I’m CoFounder and CEO at Ephemeris – The Forbes featured startup that’s combining technology and astrology to provide our customers with hyper customized jewelry with unique designs featuring their own Birth Charts. In November 2019, I came to the USA for a Forbes event and I realized how much I loved California. The people were nice, the weather was sweet and the startup scene was just so rich and incredible. I was growing daily, meeting new people, having smart conversations that fueled my soul and improved my business.
At the end of 2019, I knew I had to come back to stay for a while… I just had no idea it would happen so soon, nor how unexpected it would be. I went back to Australia, where I was living at that time. Since December, news and alerts about Covid-19 were popping up on the media. By March, flights were already fairly cheap due to the situation and, probably, to the demand decrease for international tickets. So I decided to accept a small (and interestingly timed) scholarship to take a 4-day course in Los Angeles – against all end-of-the-world forecasts. I had little money saved, but flights were cheap and American friends were offering me accommodation. I bought the return ticket for 20 days after departure and planned to use the extra days to benefit my Startup. What I didn’t know is that those 20 days would turn into an indefinite, unbelievable journey.
On the 2nd day of my course, everything got canceled – including my flight back due to the Corona spread. I found myself ‘locked’ in the same exact place that I actually wanted to be… So instead of panicking, I decided to slowly rebuild my life in the sunshine state. I went from the corona nightmare to the Californian dream. I leveraged a pandemic to change the course of my life, and although it required me so much courage, it was so rewarding! When I arrived, I had nothing. No visa, no money, no belongings. Today, I have a business with a millionaire yearly revenue, got granted the O1 visa by the USA government as ‘Alien of Extraordinary Ability and was awarded as Forbes Under 30 and Forbes NEXT 1000. What a journey!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No way! When I got “stuck” here, I had nothing. No guarantees, no money, no visa, no plans… and a fiance waiting for me in Australia. It was challenging and very painful at times. But it was also beautiful and I feel like I grew so much since.
