Today we’d like to introduce you to Lanise Luna.
Hi Lanise, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Lanise Luna, i am Kuupangaxwichem (Cupeño) and Mescalero Apache. I am currently studying Biology at California State University, San Marcos to become a marine biologist. I’ve always been drawn to creative expression. From a young age, I found joy in coloring, painting, and experimenting with different mediums like slime, rhinestoning things, and putting glitter everywhere. However, it wasn’t until 2020 during quarantine that I really honed my art skills and began to take my passion more seriously. My parents played a huge role in nurturing my interests—they encouraged me to keep painting, beading, and exploring my creativity, which gave me the confidence to pursue my passion for art. Over time, I began to refine my skills and explore new techniques. Participating in art classes and working with my mentors Eric Tippeconnic and Monica Zavala helped me discover my unique style. I also started to notice how art could connect people and tell stories in powerful ways. Today, my art is focused on the beauty and significance of ocean animals and the intricate details of these creatures while paying homage to them in a way that evokes a sense of reverence and awe. Through my art, i shed light on animals that are often overlooked or dismissed, reminding us of the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of preserving our natural world. I strive to create pieces that resonate with others and spark conversation, whether through exhibitions, collaborations, or personal projects. I’m excited to continue pushing boundaries in my work, learning from other artists, and sharing my perspective with the world. Ultimately, I hope to inspire others through my journey and the stories my art tells.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all—it’s been a journey of growth, filled with challenges that have shaped me as an artist and as a person. One of the most difficult experiences was losing my mom. It was a profound loss that deeply impacted me, and for a time, it was hard to find the motivation to create. Art became both a refuge and a way to process my emotions. It allowed me to express feelings I couldn’t put into words and keep her memory alive through my work. That loss taught me the importance of resilience and finding beauty even in the hardest moments. In addition, I struggled with self-doubt and comparing myself to others early on, and balancing art with other responsibilities wasn’t always easy. Learning new techniques or experimenting with mediums often came with moments of frustration, but those experiences taught me patience and perseverance.
As you know, we’re big fans of Crafts By Nesee. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Aside from painting, I create beadwork, which has become an integral part of my artistic expression and helped me carry on traditions. I started my Instagram (@craftsbynesee) simply to share the things I was creating, from earrings to other beaded items. What began as a way to showcase my work eventually grew into a business. Customers started reaching out, and I began beading custom earrings with unique designs and techniques to suit their tastes and stories. Through my Instagram, I’ve been able to connect with a growing community of people who appreciate the intricate and personal touch of handmade jewelry. My beadwork is inspired by my Native American culture. Each earring is carefully crafted with the intention of creating something meaningful and especially good energy, whether it’s for special occasions, memorial pieces, or everyday wear. What I love most about my business is how it allows me to blend creativity with cultural expression, and to see the joy my earrings bring to others. It’s a way for me to share my art, my heritage, and my passion with the world while building connections and making people feel seen and celebrated through the pieces I create. I’m most proud of seeing my work in places i never thought it’d be, it brings me so much joy. My art isn’t just about creating beautiful pieces—it’s about creating meaning. Whether you’re looking for a custom creation, a thoughtful gift, or simply inspiration, my work celebrates life in all its beauty, resilience, and challenges.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think risk-taking, especially in art and business, is an essential part of growth. For me, risk isn’t just about jumping into the unknown without preparation—it’s about stepping outside your comfort zone and trusting yourself, even when you’re unsure of the outcome.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was turning my art from a passion into a business. Starting my Instagram (@craftsbynesee) to share my beadwork was a risk in itself because I wasn’t sure how people would respond. It was vulnerable to put my creations out into the world and invite feedback, but it was also the first step in creating something bigger than just a personal hobby. Eventually, turning that Instagram into a business was a leap that required me to learn not only about art but also about branding, marketing, and managing customer relationships. I had to embrace the idea that I might fail, but that failure was part of the process of building something meaningful. Overall, I believe that risk-taking is a powerful way to push boundaries, learn, and ultimately find success. The key is to take risks thoughtfully—knowing that each step, no matter the outcome, teaches you something valuable.
