Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Myers.
Hi Dawn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Throughout my life and professional journey, I’ve encountered significant challenges that have shaped who I am today. From growing up in a dysfunctional family to losing my sister to cancer to being fired, all while wrestling with life-altering depression. I navigated obstacles that have tested my resilience.
As far back as I can remember I was scolded for being too loud, or overly emotional and dramatic. I got in trouble in third grade because my teacher called my parents and told them I danced on the table for sharing. I learned to shrink myself and seek the acceptance of others because of those experiences.
I dedicated myself to my work and it became the true measure of my worth. I believed that I had to work harder and longer to be of value. It was about what I did and not who I was.
It wasn’t until I stepped out on my own and no longer worked for or with others that I had to face my pain and challenge my limiting beliefs. It has been a transformative journey that has empowered me to live as my authentic self. The only way I can describe it is that I feel like a bird that has been let out of a cage that I didn’t know I was in.
Having experienced such freedom, I want everyone to have it! So, I am leveraging my experience to make a positive impact in the lives of others, which encompasses a broader mission of advocating for mental health and fostering a workplace culture that embraces open dialogue and support.
I’m passionate about helping people achieve mental well-being! I do this by:
Leading coaching groups: One for individuals to learn practical tools and strategies to improve their mental health. Another for managers gain the necessary skills to improve their ability to lead their team to productive, engaged, and successful.
Building online communities: These communities provide a safe space for people to connect, share experiences, and support each other.
Training: For individuals or organizations to raise awareness about mental health and teach valuable coping skills.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While my mission to promote mental well-being is deeply rewarding, it’s not without its hurdles. The stigma surrounding mental health can make it difficult for individuals to seek help or prioritize their well-being.
Additionally, creating and maintaining online communities requires consistent effort and vigilance to ensure a safe and supportive space.
Engaging organizations on employee well-being can be challenging, as convincing them of the long-term benefits may require overcoming budget concerns or established company cultures. Despite these obstacles, witnessing individuals prioritize their mental health and organizations investing in their employees’ well-being fuels my passion to keep breaking down barriers and creating a world where mental well-being is valued and nurtured.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Three and one-half years ago, I went into partnership and launched Guided Leadership Solutions. Nine months ago, my partner shared that she had come to realize that running an HR consultancy firm wasn’t her dream. Upon hearing that, I immediately thought I’d just take full ownership, but I couldn’t get her words out of my head: “I always thought this was my dream….” I began to wonder, what is my dream? I really hadn’t given much thought to what I wanted – again, the people pleaser.
It was then that I decided to leap out solely on my own and started Dawn Myers Consulting which encompasses “all the things” I have wanted to do around mental well-being.
What truly sets me apart is the depth of my experience. I haven’t just studied mental well-being; I’ve lived it. I’ve been there – in the depths of despair, the overwhelm of being a new leader, the struggle to build a supportive company culture, and the relentless pressure of running a business. I know what it feels like to hit rock bottom and the immense challenges of prioritizing well-being amidst daily demands.
That’s why I don’t offer one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, I draw on my experiences to create personalized plans. I understand my clients struggles because I’ve faced similar ones. With empathy and a wealth of real-world knowledge, I guide them towards a path that works for them, not a cookie-cutter program.
I am most proud when I witness individuals prioritizing their mental health and organizations investing in their employees’ well-being. There’s no greater reward than seeing the positive impact my work can have on people’s lives.
I want readers to know:
- Mental well-being is crucial, and there’s no shame in seeking help.
- Online communities can provide valuable support and connection.
- Investing in employee well-being is a smart decision for organizations.
- Together, we can create a world where mental health is valued and nurtured.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Resilience
Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from a setback. It’s the unwavering spirit that allows you to weather life’s storms, big and small. It’s the inner strength that lets you bend with challenges without breaking, adapting, and growing in the face of adversity. A resilient person doesn’t shy away from difficulty; they see it as an opportunity to learn and become stronger. They possess a deep well of emotional agility, allowing them to navigate difficult emotions and emerge with a renewed sense of purpose. Ultimately, resilience is the quiet power that allows you to not only survive but thrive in an ever-changing world.
