Inspiring Conversations with Jodie Schuller of Jodie K. Schuller & Associates – Therapies for Success

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodie Schuller.

Hi Jodie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Therapies for Success started with a dream. We dreamed of lifting our students’ ambitions to higher degrees, raising their performance to higher standards, and developing their personalities beyond normal expectations.

Then we identified and took the steps to achieve this dream. We started with our basic principles. We know children need to listen intently and speak clearly to be prepared for a formal education. We know they need to read so smoothly they can concentrate on the message. We know they need to develop critical thinking skills to ensure clear comprehension. We know they need to take notes to recall information and write powerful essays to prove their knowledge to peers and professors. And we know, beyond a doubt, they need to engage in healthy problem-solving skills and learn the art of compromise and negotiation to make and keep friends and succeed in their future careers.

Now, 35 years later, we have realized our dream. With the support of our student’s parents, along with San Diego’s educational and medical communities, we have helped hundreds of students. Our former students have graduated from college, and many have gone on to earn advanced degrees in education, law, business, and medicine. Because of our combined efforts, our students are inspired to dream more, learn more and be more.

We have teamed up to create a more literate, more socially balanced future generation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Jodie Schuller began her career in the classroom as an elementary school teacher. In her crowded classrooms, she soon became alarmingly aware that she wasn’t meeting the needs of a quarter of her students, the ones who were struggling with the core subjects. Over the years, she saw hundreds of students who were unserved or underserved by the special education programs in the public schools.

In fact, 20 percent of the population suffers from some sort of learning disability that inhibits school performance. The only students who qualify for public school special education are those whose test scores fall below the abysmal 7th percentile. Realizing there were so many students in every classroom who would not qualify for assistance and having the expertise to address these problems, Jodie and her team developed treatment plans for their clients and altered these students’ futures.

Therapies for Success has since grown into a full-service clinic which serves children and adults with communication disorders ranging from speaking their first words to writing research papers.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
Therapies for Success is a practice based on the belief that every student deserves academic and social success and every student has a unique gift to share with the world. Given the proper tools and intensive intervention, all students can master the skill set required for life-long learning. They can overcome their challenges and build on their strengths to succeed socially and academically. And all students can develop their unique talents to enter a rewarding career and achieve job satisfaction.

Equally important, every student can learn to empathize with others and develop healthy problem-solving skills. And every student can learn to compromise and negotiate to make and keep a healthy circle of friends.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Imagine a world where people have the problem-solving skills to work out their differences and resolve issues in a healthy manner!

Imagine a world where all individuals have the literacy skills to read their contractual agreements or simply delve into a great book. We’ve never met a student who couldn’t learn to read!

We know, beyond a doubt, that academic performance and social balance equate to happiness in life and economic opportunities! We inspire our students to dream more, learn more, and be more!
