Hi Gian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began in June 2021 when I was just 13 years old. I got tired of spending all day playing video games and having to ask my parents for money whenever I wanted to go out with friends. I knew I wanted a job but I was too young to work legally so I had to think differently.
The idea of serving sweets at events already existed, but one day, while enjoying a paleta, everything clicked. My imagination ran wild, and Flaky’s Popsicles was born. I envisioned being hired for events and gatherings to serve delicious popsicles with personalized toppings chosen by each client. Almost like having your own personal ice cream man right in your backyard.
I shared the idea with my parents, and they immediately believed in it and supported me. After weeks of research and preparation, we were finally ready to launch. My parents helped me financially by lending me the startup costs, with the understanding that I would stay committed and consistent and I was all in.
When it came time to name the business, I wanted something meaningful. Instead of taking the easy route and calling it “Gian’s Popsicles,” I chose a name that represented who I am. My lifelong nickname has been Flakys (Flaa-keys), also known as “Flaco” in Spanish, meaning “skinny boy.” It’s a name that stuck with me growing up, and I decided to honor it by making it the face of my brand.
As the business grew, so did the vision. In the winter of 2025, we expanded beyond popsicles and proudly launched Flaky’s Hot Chocolate, bringing the same personalized, high-quality experience to colder events and seasons.
Today, I’m proudly known as Flakys, and Flaky’s Popsicles has grown into a brand rooted in creativity, hard work, and community. What started as a simple idea has become a business ready to serve unforgettable treats whether it’s popsicles in the summer or hot chocolate in the winter at any and all events.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Starting a business at such a young age came with many challenges. One of the biggest struggles was balancing school, family life, and running a business at the same time. There were moments of exhaustion, late nights, and having to choose responsibility over hanging out with friends.
Another challenge was learning everything from scratch pricing, budgeting, customer service, marketing, and operating at events. Mistakes were made along the way, but each one became a lesson that helped the business improve. Being young also meant having to prove myself and earn trust from clients and vendors who didn’t always expect a teenager to run a professional operation.
There were also slow periods and setbacks, especially early on, when bookings weren’t guaranteed and investing back into the business felt risky. But having the support of my family and staying consistent helped me push through those moments.
Overall, the struggles shaped both me and Flaky’s Popsicles. They taught me discipline, confidence, and resilience, and they continue to motivate me to grow, adapt, and keep building something bigger than I ever imagined.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, the event dessert industry will continue shifting toward experience-driven and highly personalized services. Customers are looking for more than just a product they want interactive, memorable moments that feel tailored to their event. Health-conscious options, sustainability, and eco-friendly practices will also become standard rather than optional. We also easier online booking, and stronger collaboration within local communities will play a big role as well. Overall, the brands that stay creative, adaptable, and community-focused will be the ones that stand out and grow.
