Meet Isabel Ramirez of Salsa Digital in Southern San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Ramirez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Isabel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We’re two co-founders, Celeste who started as our copywriter and Instagram expert; and Isabel (that’s me) as our photographer, Content Manager and YouTube specialist. We met while working for a local brand with a strong social media presence, and soon became a team. We decided to take a leap of faith to pursue other interests, thinking of getting another job in content management, when I realized… Why aren’t we working for ourselves? We were already a team, we had the experience, the know-how and I had even received offers to work as a freelancer, I had to turned them down for the convenience of a salary job.

So, we sat down on my kitchen table one day, wrote down everything we knew about social media services, photos, ads, branding, algorithms, etc. And started building from there.

We reached out to small brands we loved, and some of them answered! I was also lucky to have very supportive friends who promoted my new business to EVERYONE, and that actually led to many accounts. Some of our first clients also recommended us to their friends and honestly, word of mouth is the best publicity!

After a few months of hard work, we found ourselves with full schedules and decided it was time to make our team bigger. That’s when Carolina started working with us as a copywriter and soon became an integral part of Salsa.

At the end of our first year, Celeste had to step out of Salsa to move abroad. We were lucky to find another talented woman to be part of our team who also specializes in bilingual copywriting, enter Paola!

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has had ups and downs! The first few months we could barely pay our own salary and immediately invested a lot of it back into the company. After half a year we started getting a steady income, enough to hire another copywriter… and after that it was downhill for a couple of months, haha.

We signed in a lot of new clients during our first summer, but we were also affected by the slower seasons of the service industry, which makes up for the majority of our clients.

Luckily our first year taught us a good deal about the trends and seasonality of different industries, so we were able to start this year stronger and more prepared, or so we thought. The pandemic took over and impacted many businesses. We had to start from scratch in a lot of different ways and figure out creative ways to continue supporting businesses that were struggling to stay afloat.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
First of all, we’re thrilled about the amazing team we have built at Salsa. We’re a group of women in their twenties, choosing our own schedules, working from home. That’s always been the dream! Our setup also allows us to work with clients from different time zones, which would be harder if we worked in a traditional office. We always knew we wanted to work for ourselves, and after working for our share of small businesses, we discovered there was a way we could build each other up. We started Salsa Digital because we noticed how hard it is for entrepreneurs to dedicate enough time to manage their social media.

Our goal has always been connecting with people, so we analyze deeply the core of every brand we work with, their values and their purpose… so we can find the best way to represent them in social media. It’s so exciting watching them grow and find their audience!

We’re very proud to be working with a variety of small and independent businesses, promoting local options and helping them grow their online presence. These businesses include boutiques, restaurants, influencers, wedding planners, online shops and many more! Most of our clients are in the San Diego area (La Jolla, Encinitas, Downtown, etc). We also have clients in Mexico (Tijuana, Ensenada and Mexico City).
