Meet Jim Sammons of La Jolla Kayak Fishing in La Jolla and San Diego Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Sammons.

Jim began kayak fishing in the late 80s..And is a San Diego California native and certified fish and game and IGFA licensed guide, Jim is recognized worldwide as a pioneer in the sport of kayak fishing. Involved in the sport of kayak fishing for over twenty five years running La Jolla Kayak Fishing Adventures guide service since 1995. Jim works closely with kayak manufacturers on the development of new kayak designs including his signature Kayak, The Kraken, from Jackson Kayaks.

Jim’s list of accomplishments from his kayak are many and include, landing the first and still only Marlin from a kayak in California, numerous kayak fishing records, and a kayak caught species list of over one hundred and fifty. The thing Jim is most proud of is guiding thousands of new kayak anglers to their first fish off of a kayak and turning them onto the sport he loves. Taking over 40 adventurous kayak anglers to the next level and getting them on their first Marlin from a kayak, while on trips with him to Mexico, is something he is very proud of also.

Jim has become one of the most recognizable kayak anglers in the World with his infectious enthusiasm for the sport, his lively personality and his passion for sharing the sport with others which has made him and an ideal host of The Kayak Fishing Show with Jim Sammons, which has been airing on The World Fishing Network for nine years, and The Extreme Kayak Fishing Challenge, which airs on The Sportsmans Channel for six years. In these shows Jim travels the world chasing the biggest fish he can find from his kayak.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Thanks to the support of my wife and family it honestly has been the best ride I could ever go on. Guiding new people to the sport can at times be a test of patience but being to travel around the world to share my passion has kept me sane.

Please tell us about La Jolla Kayak Fishing.
La Jolla Kayak Fishing is the longest running kayak fishing guide service in the county and I have put thousands on clients on their first fish from a kayak and many on their largest fish ever. I am pretty proud of that. I think the thing the business really specializes in is instruction. When someone finishes a day with me they will have the skills to go out kayak fishing on their own and be successful and safe. Guided trips on San Diego Bay for beginners and offshore La Jolla for those with experience.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Visiting my uncle in Canada, as he is the one that really instilled my love of fishing.
