Today we’d like to introduce you to Liam Rosenberg.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have loved to explore and travel around the world from as early as I remember. As a little kid growing up in the suburbs of New York City, I had much to do and adventure in the Tri-State Area. In 7th grade, I was introduced to the “Instagrammable food” culture by one of my good friends. Ever since then, I’ve documented my trendy food journeys wherever I go.
At first, I only posted pictures of my food to Snapchat. However, this past August I moved to San Diego, and my horizons expanded greatly. As you could probably tell, SoCal is a very different experience from New York/New Jersey. Because I’ve had so many new places to explore and discover in the area between San Diego and L.A., I decided to start an Instagram profile dedicated to trendy restaurants & desserts in the area and beyond.
Food Over Friends originally started as a way to simply share my food ventures with the world, but over the last couple of months, it has become a medium where I’m able to explore my surroundings. I’ve learned so much about San Diego through my foodie account, and I’m so glad that it has gotten me to where I am today. Not only has it educated me about California, but my friends at home and around the world get to see the amazing things there are in SD.
Has it been a smooth road?
Getting Food Over Friends to reach its current state of popularity has not always been smooth sailing. Although having friends who shared the common interest of trendy food was definitely an upside, jump-starting my foodie account took a lot of time and effort.
I learned that I had to sacrifice if I wanted my business to succeed, but at the same time, it has still been a positive learning experience for me. In the very beginning, I realized that in order for my posts to be broadcast to a large audience that I needed to promote them with real money.
I invested a lot to propel my Instagram account to the top, and even then some of the likes and engagement on my posts did not fare well. At one point, I even debated hiring a service to help me promote my account. However, through careful planning of my posts and a targeted audience in San Diego, I eventually got my account to reach where it is in now.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Food Over Friends (@_food_over_friends on Instagram) started as a simple way for me to share reviews and pictures of restaurants that I had been to all over the world. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of many popular foodie accounts like New Fork City and Pigout NYC and eventually seek thousands of followers and likes.
However, I quickly realized the lack of a popular food-based Instagram profile in San Diego. From that moment on, Food Over Friends also became a way for me to share my exploration of SD with the world and educate myself about an area I was new to. I think this is what sets my food blog apart from others: I not only hope to share amazing eats on Instagram, but I also hope to share the growing status of San Diego with the world.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
As a New Yorker, I think San Diego does provide a lot for businesses like mine. Restaurants and dessert places are sprouting up all over the county, from the brand-new One Paseo to La Jolla to Little Italy.
I also think that the SD’s proximity to Los Angeles and Orange County also adds a lot to its attraction. At the same time, I believe San Diego is still growing, even as the eighth-largest city in America. SD shows a lot of potentials, and over the next several years many food and tourist blogs like mine will start up here.
