Meet Matthew Barnhart of Concierge Wealth Management in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Barnhart.

Matthew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up as the poor kid in a rich neighborhood. My first car was a ’76 Toyota Celica (with a paint ring on the top) and my best friend’s first car was a ’94 Acura. Before that (same neighborhood) in Junior High I had a math teacher who had us do a stock project and pick 4 stocks and track their prices throughout the year. I remember how much fun it was and to this day love following the stock market.

While attending the University of Washington and working full-time for my best friend’s parent’s construction company, I helped complete a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter office. I was enamored with what the advisors did all day and began having regular conversations with the manager. Before long I was applying for a job and was hooked. Now I love helping families escape the financial pitfalls that I learned from and experienced in my own life.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been two major Obstacles in my career. The first was September 11, 2001. Not only was I fairly new in the business and working for the largest tenant of the World Trade Center, but I had just moved from the Bellevue, Washington office to the Brea, California office to be with my fiancé Andrea while she attended Optometry school.

Needless to say the Economy for MSDW and the Economy in general were greatly affected. I was let go by Morgan shortly after our marriage (the following Tuesday) and was set adrift to find a new firm. I had several interviews and determined that I really wanted to focus on financial planning versus just investment management. I ended up taking a position with HR Block to help them expand their financial planning division. Within a couple years I was the top advisor in my office and then became the top advisor in the San Diego office. It then became evident they were going to sell the financial division and I found the location I have been in for the last 11 years. Since then the struggle has been building a team of advisors and staff to help all of our clients reach their goals. At this point we have an amazing team that continues to grow and support our mission.

Concierge Wealth Management – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our mission at Concierge Wealth Management is: to inform and educate our clients, empowering them to make the right decisions specifically tailored to their needs, creating an inspiring picture for them and that of their families. We seek to simplify our client’s financial lives.

Our mission statement is more than words; it’s the action we take. Let me define what a few keywords in our mission statement mean to us.
Inform: Our goal is to inform you of all the opportunities available to you to design the life, financial or otherwise, you imagine.
Educate: Once you are informed with all the options, we work to educate you as to how each decision could affect the overall picture of your life.
Simplify: Once you have made informed decisions we make it easy for you to track your progress with the help of our team, or on your own.
This is an ongoing structured process built on communication. We continually connect with you as there are always changes which can affect your overall picture.

What’s your favorite memory from childhood?
I always loved doing puzzles and math. I can remember as a child completing a puzzle and then turning it over and doing the card board side. While strange (and boring) I still love putting puzzles together. Piecing together the different facets of a client’s life with the goals they want to work towards keeps things very interesting to me. I also loved and continue to love the outdoors and playing football. I believe your financial health and your physical health are more connected than not.
