Meet Matthew Looney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Looney.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Matthew. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I am originally from San Ramon, CA and I lived and grew up there all of my life. I came down to San Diego to study film, television, and new media at SDSU. Growing up I had always wanted to be a filmmaker but couldn’t decide what I wanted to be.

Going to film school helped me fall in love with producing and editing rather than writing and directing. I went from filming YouTube videos with my friends in the backyard to making award-winning short films that have played at film festivals here in San Diego.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making a film is never easy. Many of the films I’ve worked on have run into issues in regards to scheduling, time management, or money troubles. The worst instance has to be in a film I made my freshman year. We were filming out in the middle of nowhere: no food, barely any water, and no bathrooms! It was the first time I truly felt like an amateur.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am mainly a producer. My job is to organize the film production from top to bottom: recruiting more people to work on the project, finding locations, raising funds, casting, and more. The director is mainly in charge of the look and creative decisions; my job is to make the director’s vision a reality.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
What first sparked my interest in filmmaking was getting a camcorder at the age of nine or ten. It was a tiny little thing, it only held like 2 GB of space and only shot in 480p, but to me it was better than getting a bunch of art supplies.

I used to make videos of everything: my toys, my friends, my cats, stuff around the house, etc. I still have all the files somewhere but I have no interest in watching them. I would die from cringing!
