Meet Mitch Kenney of Colepepper Plumbing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitch Kenney.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mitch. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a 3rd generation plumber. I was born and raised in Colorado. I married a California girl out there and moved here to live the California dream. I started Colepepper Plumbing four years ago. There are lots of details along the way that make this story more interesting, it would be best to say them to a person and the person could decide what details to keep or leave out. We are quickly growing and are looking to become the biggest plumbing and drain company in San Diego.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is lots of competition to compete with. There are over 500 plumbing companies in San Diego to compete with. To really grow big you have to do lots of advertising which is expensive. However, our biggest challenge is the people aspect. This industry attracts a lot of shady type people with poor character.

We try to find the best people we can, and put them through our training process and teach them to operate with character and integrity. Beyond that, we are also taking people with no experience, whom have good character and are teaching them the trade

Colepepper Plumbing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We started out primarily as a plumbing company; however we are transitioning to become more of a drain company. We are known for our $71 drain cleaning special. We will clean any drain in a home for $71. We like drain work because it is easier to teach people and easier to grow a company through drain work than through plumbing work. What sets us apart is our response time. We get out to jobs very fast and get them done fast. In addition to this, we have the best warranties in San Diego.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Our success is defined by our KPIS that we measure. They are proprietary so I won’t share them here. But I will say this. Most plumbing companies are breaking even or losing money and they don’t even know it because they don’t track their numbers. We know our numbers and this is part of the reason how we can continue to grow the company.
