Today we’d like to introduce you to Nekol Gaskins and Kia Phillips.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nekol and Kia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2016, we came together with a desire to create an activewear brand that represented and inspired women of color. We felt highly underrepresented in the activewear market. We almost never saw women that looked like us in big name activewear advertisements. We decided to create comfortable, culturally inspired activewear that compliments all skin tones and designed to fit all body types. Today, we are three collections in and thanks to our customers, supporters and partners, we are continuing to grow and expand.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been a smooth one. We have had our ups and downs. In the beginning, it was very hard to raise capital to produce our first collection. Thanks to family support, we were able to overcome that obstacle. We have also had our struggles with work-life balance and being able to manage the business with just the two of us. As working mothers, it can be difficult to manage everything.
Please tell us about Glamourina.
Glamourina is the go-to activewear brand for culturally conscious women. We create culturally inspired activewear that fits all body types and we offer a wide size range (XS-3XL). What sets us apart is that we have created a community where women of color feel represented and motivated to live healthier. By providing activewear that is infused with African prints and accents, women of color feel included. What sets us apart is that we make women of color the majority in all of our marketing and advertisement content.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Our favorite childhood memories include the fun times spent with our families and loved ones.
